UCLA at Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding display before 104,168 fans at Ohio Stadium on Saturday, the Ohio State Buckeyes remained undefeated, overwhelming the UCLA Bruins 48 to 10.
The victory improved Ohio State’s record to 10 wins and 0 losses, while UCLA fell to 3 wins and 7 losses.
The Buckeyes established dominance early, scoring on their opening drive. Running back Bo Jackson of Cleveland capped the methodical 71-yard march with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. Jackson finished the day with 112 rushing yards on 15 carries. After forcing a UCLA punt, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin of Carlsbad, California, orchestrated another long drive, setting up a 41-yard field goal from kicker Jayden Fielding of League City, Texas, to end the first quarter tied at 10.
The second quarter belonged entirely to the Buckeyes, who erupted for 17 points. Sayin connected with wide receiver Bryson Rodgers of Zephyrhills, Florida, on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Later, running back James Peoples of San Antonio scored on a 19-yard run. A 33-yard field goal from Fielding as time expired in the half sent Ohio State into the locker room with a 27 to 10 lead.
Sayin was efficient, completing 23 of 31 pass attempts for 184 yards and one touchdown.
Any hope of a UCLA comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. Ohio State running back Isaiah West of Philadelphia scored on a 1-yard run, extending the lead to 34 to 10. The Bruins responded with their lone touchdown drive, which was punctuated by an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Duncan of Orinda, California, to wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer of Los Angeles.
The brief spark for UCLA was immediately doused on the ensuing kickoff. Ohio State’s Lorenzo Styles Jr. of Pickerington, Ohio, fielded the ball and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, swinging the momentum completely back to the Buckeyes and pushing the score to 41 to 10.
UCLA managed a 32-yard field goal from kicker M. Bhaghani in the fourth quarter, but Ohio State closed the scoring with a second rushing touchdown from Peoples, this time from 8 yards out. Backup quarterback Lincoln Kienholz of Pierre, South Dakota, saw action in the final quarter, completing all three of his pass attempts for 34 yards and adding a 3-yard run.
Defensively, the Buckeyes were stifling. Linebacker JonJon Vaughns of Pasadena led UCLA with nine tackles, while defensive back Scooter Jackson of Compton had eight. For Ohio State, safety Sonny Styles of Pickerington recorded seven tackles, and defensive end Caden Curry of Greenwood, Indiana, had five tackles, including one for a loss.
The Bruins’ offense struggled to sustain drives against the Buckeyes’ defense. Duncan completed 16 of 23 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown. UCLA’s ground game was held in check, with no runner exceeding 15 yards.
Ohio State’s next game is at home against Rutgers on Nov. 22. UCLA will host Washington on the same date.
