Ohio State Routs UCLA to Stay Unbeaten

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding display of power on both sides of the ball, the Ohio State Buckeyes overwhelmed the visiting UCLA Bruins 48-10 before a crowd of 104,168 at Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the Buckeyes methodically building a lead before unleashing a decisive third-quarter flurry that put the contest out of reach. Ohio State improved its season record to 10 wins and 0 losses, while UCLA fell to 3 wins and 7 losses.

Ohio State set the tone early, orchestrating a methodical 11-play, 71-yard opening drive that consumed over six minutes of clock. The series was capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by running back Bo Jackson, giving the Buckeyes a lead they would not relinquish.

UCLA’s offense struggled to find any traction against a relentless Ohio State defense. The Bruins managed just two first downs on their first three possessions, with punter Will Karoll seeing frequent action. The Buckeyes extended their lead later in the first quarter with a 41-yard field goal from kicker Jayden Fielding, making the score 10-0.

The second quarter saw the Buckeyes begin to pull away. Quarterback Julian Sayin, a native of Carlsbad, California, engineered another scoring drive, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bryson Rodgers. Sayin finished an efficient afternoon, completing 23 of 31 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown.

Ohio State’s defense continued to stifle the Bruins, forcing a quick three-and-out on the ensuing possession. Taking over with favorable field position, the Buckeyes needed just five plays to find the end zone again, this time on a 19-yard scoring run by James Peoples. A late Fielding field goal from 33 yards as time expired in the half sent the teams to the locker room with Ohio State leading 27-0.

Any hope of a UCLA comeback was extinguished in a dramatic third quarter. The Bruins finally found a spark on offense when quarterback Luke Duncan connected with wideout Rico Flores Jr. on a 51-yard pass, setting up UCLA’s first score of the day. Duncan later found Kwazi Gilmer for an 18-yard touchdown pass, putting the Bruins on the board.

The celebration was short-lived. On the ensuing kickoff, Ohio State’s Lorenzo Styles Jr. fielded the ball and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, immediately answering the Bruins’ score and swinging momentum irrevocably back to the home team. The electrifying return pushed the Ohio State lead to 41-7.

UCLA added a 32-yard field goal from M. Bhaghani in the fourth quarter, but Ohio State’s reserves provided the final exclamation point. Backup quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, from Pierre, South Dakota, guided the Buckeyes on a 97-yard drive that was finished by an 8-yard Peoples touchdown run, his second of the day, for the final margin of 48-10.

The Buckeyes’ offensive effort was a balanced and multifaceted attack. Jackson was the workhorse, rushing for 112 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Isaiah West added 61 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Peoples contributed 42 yards and two scores. The receiving corps was led by Jeremiah Smith, who caught four passes for 40 yards, and Brandon Inniss, who had six receptions for 30 yards.

Defensively, Ohio State was led by Sonny Styles, who recorded seven tackles. The unit consistently pressured Duncan and limited UCLA’s rushing attack to minimal gains. For the Bruins, linebacker JonJon Vaughns logged a game-high nine tackles in a losing effort. Duncan finished 16 of 23 for 154 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

The victory sets up a highly anticipated showdown for Ohio State, which will travel to face rival Michigan on Nov. 29. UCLA will return home to face Washington on Nov. 22. The final score of 58 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 47.5.
