Texas at Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of power and precision, the Georgia Bulldogs overwhelmed the Texas Longhorns 35 to 10 on Saturday night before a capacity crowd of 93,033 at Sanford Stadium.
The game, a tightly contested defensive struggle for three quarters, erupted in the final period as Georgia scored 21 unanswered points to turn a close contest into a decisive victory. The win improved Georgia’s record to 9-1, while Texas fell to 7-3.
Texas opened the game with a methodical, 15-play drive that consumed over six minutes of clock, but the Bulldogs’ defense held firm in the red zone, forcing the Longhorns to settle for a 33-yard field goal from Mitchell Shipley. The early 3-0 lead for the visitors was short-lived.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton answered with an impressive drive of his own, culminating in a 17-yard touchdown pass to Noah Thomas. Stockton, a native of Tiger, Georgia, was surgical on the possession, connecting on key passes, including a 25-yard strike to London Humphreys that moved the chains.
The second quarter saw the Bulldogs extend their lead. After a 59-yard kickoff return set Texas up with promising field position, the Longhorns’ drive stalled near midfield. Later in the quarter, Texas quarterback Arch Manning, from New Orleans, Louisiana, engineered a drive deep into Georgia territory. But on second down from the Georgia 29, Manning’s pass over the middle was intercepted by Bulldogs defensive back KJ Bolden of Buford, Georgia, at the 16-yard line, snuffing out a prime scoring opportunity. The Bulldogs capitalized on the momentum with another scoring drive, finished by Stockton’s second touchdown pass to Thomas, a 4-yard connection, to take a 14-3 lead into halftime.
The Longhorns emerged from the break with renewed vigor. On Georgia’s second possession of the third quarter, Stockton’s pass was intercepted by Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who returned it to the Bulldogs’ 36-yard line. Manning and the Texas offense efficiently moved the ball to the 7-yard line, where on third down, Manning found Ryan Wingo for a touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 14-10.
The fourth quarter, however, belonged entirely to Georgia. The Bulldogs’ offense found another gear, and their defense completely stifled the Longhorns. Stockton needed just two plays to find the end zone again, hitting Humphreys on a deep 30-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 21-10.
After a successful onside kick recovery, Georgia’s ground game took over, methodically driving down the field. Stockton capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Lawson Luckie. The Bulldogs’ final score came on a 4-yard rushing touchdown from Stockton himself, his fourth touchdown pass of the game combined with one on the ground, sealing the 35-10 final.
Stockton finished an efficient 24 of 29 for 229 yards through the air, adding 29 yards on the ground. His favorite target was Zachariah Branch, who caught six passes for 41 yards, while Humphreys’ two catches totaled 55 yards and a score.
For Texas, Manning completed 27 of 43 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown, but was sacked multiple times and threw a critical interception. Wingo was his top receiver, hauling in nine catches for 62 yards and the team’s sole touchdown.
Defensively, Georgia’s secondary was relentless, with Chris Cole leading the team with seven tackles. The unit consistently pressured Manning and limited big plays after halftime. Texas linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith registered a game-high nine tackles and a sack in a losing effort.
Georgia will host Charlotte next Saturday, while Texas returns home to face Arkansas.
