Utah Tech at Abilene Christian

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant defensive performance, fueled by a trio of interception returns for touchdowns, propelled Abilene Christian to a 31-10 victory over Utah Tech on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats’ defense outscored the Trailblazers’ offense, turning three Utah Tech passes into 26 points to secure the win and improve their season record to 6-4. Utah Tech fell to 2-8.

The game was a defensive struggle for much of the first half, with both offenses sputtering. The stalemate was broken in spectacular fashion late in the second quarter. With Utah Tech driving near midfield, Abilene Christian linebacker Zion Fonua intercepted a Bronson Barben pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

The Trailblazers responded with their most impressive drive of the game. They marched 75 yards on 11 plays, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Asa Chatman to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:49 remaining in the half.

The tie was short-lived. On Utah Tech’s next possession, defensive back Dorian Plumley picked off Barben and returned it 10 yards for a score, putting the Wildcats back in front 14-7, a lead they would not relinquish.

Abilene Christian extended its lead in the third quarter with its only sustained offensive touchdown drive. Running back E.J. Wilson broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run, capping a 75-yard drive to make it 21-7.

Utah Tech managed to answer with a 51-yard field goal from Ilya Uvaydov late in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 21-10. Any hope of a comeback was extinguished in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats’ defense struck again. Plumley secured his second interception of the game, and on the ensuing drive, backup quarterback Quayde Hawkins connected with Raydrian Baltrip on a 16-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 28-10.

A 31-yard field goal from Brandon Perez with 12:33 remaining provided the final margin. The Wildcats’ defense sealed the game late when linebacker Will Shaffer recorded the team’s third interception.

Offensively, Abilene Christian was led by Wilson, who rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Stone Earle started at quarterback, completing 17 of 29 passes for 156 yards. For Utah Tech, Barben completed 18 of 33 passes for 139 yards and three interceptions. Chatman was a bright spot, rushing for 49 yards and a touchdown while adding 33 receiving yards.

The victory keeps Abilene Christian in the hunt for a winning season as they prepare to travel to Eastern Kentucky next Saturday. Utah Tech will look to regroup on the road against West Georgia.
