Wildcats roll past Trailblazers behind defensive scores

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant defensive performance, fueled by a trio of interception returns for touchdowns, propelled the Abilene Christian Wildcats to a decisive 31-10 victory over the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats’ defense outscored the Trailblazers’ offense, turning three Utah Tech passes into game-changing scores that broke open a contest that was surprisingly tight through the first half. The win improved Abilene Christian to 6-4 on the season, while Utah Tech fell to 2-8.

After a scoreless first quarter defined by punts and offensive struggles, the Wildcats struck first, not with their offense, but with their defense. With Utah Tech driving near midfield early in the second quarter, linebacker Zion Fonua of Euless, Texas, stepped in front of a Bronson Barben pass and returned it 16 yards for the game’s first touchdown.

Utah Tech responded with its most impressive drive of the evening. The Trailblazers marched 75 yards on 11 plays, culminating in a 7-yard touchdown run by running back Asa Chatman. Chatman was the workhorse on the drive, carrying the ball four times for 22 yards and also catching an 18-yard pass from Barben. The score tied the game at 7-7.

The tie was short-lived. On Utah Tech’s very next possession, the Wildcats’ defense struck again. Safety Dorian Plumley of El Reno, Oklahoma, intercepted a Barben attempt and weaved his way 10 yards into the end zone, restoring Abilene Christian’s lead at 14-7 heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams trade field goals. Utah Tech’s Ilya Uvaydov connected from 51 yards out to pull the Trailblazers within 14-10. The Wildcats answered with their offensive highlight of the afternoon, a 36-yard touchdown run by E.J. Wilson that capped a 75-yard drive and extended their lead to 21-10. Wilson finished as the game’s leading rusher, carrying the ball 15 times for 96 yards.

Any hope of a Utah Tech comeback was extinguished in the fourth quarter. Abilene Christian added a 31-yard field goal from Brandon Perez to make it 24-10. Later, after a change at quarterback, the Wildcats put the game completely out of reach. Backup quarterback Quayde Hawkins of Bainbridge, Georgia, found receiver Raydrian Baltrip for a 16-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 31-10.

The Wildcats’ defense sealed the victory with a third pick-six when linebacker Will Shaffer of Tempe, Arizona, intercepted Barben and returned the ball 16 yards to the Utah Tech 34-yard line, effectively ending any remaining threat.

Utah Tech’s offense never found a consistent rhythm. Barben completed 18 of 33 passes for 139 yards and was intercepted three times. Chatman provided a bright spot, rushing for 49 yards and a touchdown while adding 33 receiving yards.

For Abilene Christian, starting quarterback Stone Earle of Keller, Texas, managed the game effectively, completing 17 of 29 passes for 156 yards. The Wildcats’ ground game was potent, amassing 218 yards led by Wilson and Rovaughn Banks Jr., who added 55 yards on seven carries.

The loss dampens the momentum Utah Tech had built from a 34-33 win over North Alabama the previous week. Abilene Christian, meanwhile, builds on its 31-28 victory against Tarleton State and continues its push for a winning season. The Wildcats’ defensive performance far exceeded the projections of the Interstat game simulator, which had forecast a 42-26 Abilene Christian win, and their ELO system, which gave the Wildcats a 93.4 percent probability of victory.

Utah Tech travels to face West Georgia next Saturday. Abilene Christian hits the road for a matchup at Eastern Kentucky, also on Saturday.
