Rhode Island at Elon
ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — Quarterback Devin Farrell threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, and Antwain Littleton Jr. rushed for 101 yards as Rhode Island methodically dispatched Elon 34-20 on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium.
The Rams, improving to 8-2, controlled the game from the outset, building a commanding first-half lead that the Phoenix could not overcome. The result was an upset based on the pregame betting lines, as Elon had been installed as a 4.5-point favorite.
Rhode Island’s offense found its rhythm early, capping a 12-play, 75-yard opening drive with a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Alex McClelland. The score gave the Rams a 7-3 lead after Elon had opened the scoring with a 50-yard field goal from Luke Barnes.
The second quarter belonged entirely to the Rams, who put up 17 points to take a commanding 24-10 lead into halftime. Garth White connected on a 52-yard field goal to extend the lead. Farrell then engineered two quick scoring strikes, first finding Greg Gaines III on a 19-yard pass and then hitting Aboraa Kwarteng for a spectacular 70-yard touchdown. Kwarteng finished with four receptions for 124 yards.
Elon, which fell to 4-6, showed a flicker of life just before the half. Quarterback Landen Clark led a frantic two-minute drill, eventually connecting with Isaiah Fuhrmann on a 9-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14 points.
Any momentum for the home team was stifled in the third quarter. After a 43-yard field goal from White pushed the Rhode Island lead to 27-10, the Phoenix special teams provided a spark. Darren James-Hamilton returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown, bringing Elon within 10 points.
Rhode Island responded immediately, reasserting its dominance with a physical drive to start the fourth quarter. The Rams marched down the field, culminating in McClelland’s second rushing touchdown, this time from 6 yards out, to seal the victory at 34-17. Elon would add a late 41-yard field goal from Barnes for the final margin.
The Rams’ defense was a key factor, sacking Elon quarterbacks six times and consistently disrupting their offensive flow. Clark and Marco Lainez combined for 195 passing yards for the Phoenix, but the running game was largely contained.
The loss dampened a strong performance from Elon’s Jeff Yurk, who punted six times for 318 yards, and James-Hamilton, who tallied 93 return yards and the punt return touchdown.
The game’s total of 54 points went over the betting over/under of 48.5, defying the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 36-25 victory for Elon. Rhode Island now looks ahead to a road game at Maine on Nov. 15, while Elon will travel to face Campbell on the same date.
