Rhode Island Rides Strong First Half to Victory Over Elon

ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a result that defied the oddsmakers and statistical projections, the Rhode Island Rams methodically dismantled the Elon Phoenix 34-20 on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium, leaning on a potent offense and a bruising ground game to secure a crucial road victory.

Entering the contest as a 4.5-point underdog despite a superior record, Rhode Island improved to 8-2 on the season, while Elon fell to 4-6. The game’s total of 54 points sailed over the pregame over/under of 48.5, a surprise driven by the Rams’ offensive efficiency.

The Rams seized control early and never truly relented. Quarterback Devin Farrell, a Stockbridge, Georgia native, was the engine of the Rhode Island attack, delivering a masterful performance. He completed 24 of 30 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns, efficiently distributing the ball and avoiding major mistakes beyond a single interception.

Farrell’s primary target was Aboraa Kwarteng, who turned four receptions into a game-high 124 yards, including a spectacular 70-yard touchdown catch and run in the second quarter that broke the game open. Greg Gaines III also proved to be a reliable weapon, hauling in six catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Complementing the aerial assault was a relentless rushing attack spearheaded by the powerful Antwain Littleton Jr. The 285-pound running back from Greenbelt, Maryland, battered the Elon defense for 101 yards on 20 carries, consistently moving the chains and controlling the clock. Brendon Barrow added 58 yards on 11 attempts, providing a change of pace.

The Rams opened the scoring on their first possession, capping a 16-play, 75-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown scramble by Farrell. After forcing an Elon punt, Rhode Island extended its lead with a 52-yard field goal from Garth White early in the second quarter, making the score 10-3.

The momentum shifted decisively in Rhode Island’s favor midway through the second period. Following a defensive stop, the Rams needed just two plays to find the end zone, with Farrell connecting with Gaines on a 19-yard scoring strike. On the very next Rhode Island possession, Farrell hit Kwarteng on a short pass that the receiver turned into a 70-yard touchdown, stunning the home crowd and pushing the lead to 24-3.

Elon, which started Landen Clark at quarterback, showed flashes of life. Clark engineered a late first-half drive, culminating in a 9-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Fuhrmann with just two seconds remaining on the clock to cut the deficit to 24-10 at the intermission.

Any hope of a Phoenix comeback was dampened in the third quarter. Rhode Island opened the second half with another long drive, resulting in a 43-yard White field goal. The Rams’ defense then forced a three-and-out, but a special teams breakdown provided Elon a spark. Darren James-Hamilton fielded the ensuing punt and raced 70 yards for a touchdown, suddenly pulling the Phoenix within 10 points.

Rhode Island, however, responded as they had all afternoon. The Rams embarked on another methodical, time-consuming drive that stretched from the late third quarter into the fourth, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Alex McClelland to restore a three-score lead at 34-13.

Elon’s offense, which switched to Marco Lainez under center for much of the second half, struggled to sustain drives against a stout Rhode Island defense. The Phoenix managed only a 41-yard Luke Barnes field goal with just over three minutes remaining for the final margin of 34-20. A subsequent onside kick attempt failed, and the Rams were able to run out the clock.

For Elon, Clark finished 12 of 18 for 104 yards and a touchdown through the air, while Lainez went 6 for 13 for 91 yards. Fuhrmann was a bright spot with four catches for 79 yards and a score. The loss puts a damper on Elon’s postseason aspirations as they look ahead to road games at Campbell and a home finale against North Carolina A&T.

The victory solidifies a standout season for Rhode Island, which has now won three straight. The Rams will look to continue their winning ways next week on the road against Maine before returning home to conclude the regular season against Hampton.
