Bucknell Bisons Dominate Fordham Rams for Decisive Road Victory
BRONX, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a decisive performance that defied pregame projections, the Bucknell Bison defeated the Fordham Rams 37 to 19 on Saturday at Jack Coffey Field, capitalizing on early momentum and a dominant first half to secure the road victory.
The Bison improved to 5-5 on the season, reaching the .500 mark, while the Rams fell to a disappointing 1-9. The outcome was a stark contrast to the expectations set by Interstat, whose game simulator had projected a Fordham win with a final score of 39-24 and gave the Rams a 59.7 percent probability of victory. Fordham had entered the contest as a 2.5-point favorite.
The game was effectively decided in the first 30 minutes, as Bucknell built an insurmountable 24-point lead by halftime. The Bison set the tone on their opening drive, marching down the field with a methodical mix of runs and short passes. The drive culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christopher Dietrich to Michael Cadden, giving Bucknell an early 7-0 lead. The Bison added to their total later in the quarter with a 48-yard field goal from Matt Schearer.
The second quarter saw the Bison extend their lead in dramatic fashion. After forcing a Fordham punt, Bucknell’s Charlie Kreinbucher broke through the line to block the kick. Teammate Jack Goheen scooped up the loose ball and returned it 7 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 17-0.
Fordham finally found a response late in the second quarter. A sustained drive, powered by the running of quarterback Gunnar Smith and running back Jamell James, ended with James plunging into the end zone from one yard out. The Rams failed on the two-point conversion attempt, leaving the score at 17-6.
Any momentum Fordham gained from that score was immediately erased by the Bison offense. In a swift two-minute drill before halftime, Dietrich engineered a quick scoring drive. He connected with Sam Milligan on a 42-yard touchdown strike with just 18 seconds remaining in the half, sending Bucknell into the locker room with a commanding 24-6 advantage.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with the only scoring coming from the foot of Bucknell’s Schearer, who connected on field goals from 37 and 42 yards to extend the Bison lead to 30-6.
Bucknell put the game completely out of reach early in the fourth quarter. After a Fordham turnover on downs, the Bison offense went back to work. Dietrich found Milligan for their second scoring connection of the day, this time a 22-yard pass that made the score 37-6.
Fordham added a consolation touchdown with 1:17 remaining in the game, as Smith hit tight end Jaden Allen on a 4-yard pass. The Rams attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by Bucknell, allowing the Bison to run out the clock and seal the victory.
Statistically, the game was controlled by Bucknell’s efficient offense and opportunistic defense. Bison quarterback Christopher Dietrich, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior from Sparta, New Jersey, was highly effective, completing 17 of 22 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 13 yards on the ground. His primary target was Sam Milligan, who hauled in four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing 20 rushing yards.
For Fordham, quarterback Gunnar Smith of Lake Mary, Florida, struggled with consistency, completing 14 of 30 passes for 170 yards, two touchdowns, and one critical interception. He was also the Rams’ leading rusher, scrambling for 56 yards on 16 carries. Jabril Carter was his top receiver, making three catches for 76 yards.
The Bison defense was a key factor, sacking Smith multiple times and generating a crucial takeaway. Safety Darius Day of Wayland, Massachusetts, intercepted a Smith pass in the fourth quarter to halt a potential Fordham scoring drive.
The teams will now look ahead to their next contests. Bucknell will return home to host Holy Cross next Saturday, November 15, while Fordham will travel to face Georgetown on the same day.
