Tennessee Tech at Eastern Illinois
CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a result that defied pregame projections, the undefeated Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles methodically dispatched the Eastern Illinois Panthers 21-9 on Saturday at O’Brien Field, leaning on a dominant first-quarter outburst and a stifling defensive performance to remain perfect on the season.
The Golden Eagles, now 10-0, seized control of the game from the opening kickoff, rendering the Panthers’ status as 23.5-point favorites a distant memory by the end of the first quarter. The victory was sealed not by offensive fireworks, but by a defensive touchdown in the fourth quarter that extinguished any hope of an Eastern Illinois comeback.
Tennessee Tech’s offense operated with efficiency in the early going. The Golden Eagles constructed two lengthy first-quarter scoring drives, both capped by rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Kekoa Visperas of Spanaway, Washington, orchestrated the attack, finishing the game 17 of 23 for 151 yards through the air while adding 54 yards on the ground. His primary connection was with receiver Maury Sullivan of St. Louis, Missouri, who hauled in three passes for 64 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown reception with 37 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The opening scoring drive was a balanced effort, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown run by Q’Daryus Jennings of Hartford, Kentucky. Jennings finished with 30 rushing yards and the score. The early 14-point lead established a template for the game, as the Golden Eagles’ defense consistently frustrated the Panthers’ offense.
Eastern Illinois, which fell to 3-7, struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Cole LaCrue of Broomfield, Colorado, completed 15 of 31 passes for 174 yards and a late touchdown but was harassed by the Tennessee Tech pass rush and sacked multiple times. The Panthers’ most consistent weapon was running back Charles Kellom of Cincinnati, Ohio, who gashed the Golden Eagles for 80 yards on 14 carries.
The Panthers managed only a 20-yard field goal from Drew Schiller of New Lenox, Illinois, in the second quarter, sending the teams into halftime with Tennessee Tech leading 21-3. The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams exchanging punts and the Golden Eagles seeing a promising drive end on an interception by Eastern Illinois defensive back Moses Alexander of Galveston, Texas.
The Panthers’ best opportunity to close the gap came early in the fourth quarter, but their drive stalled at the Tennessee Tech 30-yard line, resulting in a turnover on downs. The game’s decisive play came with just under four minutes remaining. Tennessee Tech defender Theron Gaines of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, scooped up a fumble by LaCrue and rumbled 10 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 28-3.
Eastern Illinois added a cosmetic score with 1:16 left in the game on an 18-yard touchdown pass from LaCrue to DeAirious Smith of Lexington, Kentucky. Smith led all receivers with six catches for 77 yards and the score. The Panthers’ two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the final score at 28-9.
The Tennessee Tech defense was the story, holding an Eastern Illinois offense that was projected to score 42 points by a national simulator to just a single touchdown. Safety Kaleb Purdy of St. Peters, Missouri, contributed an interception for the Golden Eagles.
The victory sets up a significant matchup for Tennessee Tech next Saturday as they travel to face the Kentucky Wildcats. Eastern Illinois will look to regroup on the road against Lindenwood. The combined score of 30 points fell well below the pregame over/under line of 52.5.
