Tennessee Tech Stays Unbeaten, Tops Eastern Illinois
CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a result that defied both the betting markets and conventional expectations, the undefeated Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles methodically dispatched the Eastern Illinois Panthers 21-9 on a chilly Saturday at O’Brien Field.
The game, played on Nov. 8, 2025, was a stark contrast to pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a high-scoring affair with Eastern Illinois winning 42-32, and the Panthers were installed as 23.5-point favorites. Instead, Tennessee Tech’s stifling defense and efficient early offense secured their tenth consecutive victory, improving their record to a perfect 10-0. Eastern Illinois fell to 3-7.
The Golden Eagles established their dominance immediately, scoring two first-quarter touchdowns to build a commanding 14-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
The opening drive set the tone. Quarterback Kekoa Visperas of Spanaway, Washington, efficiently moved the offense downfield, mixing his own runs with timely passes. The drive was capped by a 5-yard touchdown run from Q’Daryius Jennings, who finished with 30 rushing yards and a score.
Tennessee Tech’s defense then forced a quick stop, and the offense went right back to work. Visperas showcased his dual-threat ability, connecting with receiver Maury Sullivan on a deep 48-yard touchdown pass with just 37 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Visperas ended the day completing 17 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown, while adding 54 yards on the ground.
Eastern Illinois, struggling to find any rhythm against a relentless Golden Eagles defense, finally got on the board in the second quarter. A sustained drive, fueled by the running of Charles Kellom, advanced to the Tennessee Tech 2-yard line. But the Golden Eagles’ defense stiffened, forcing the Panthers to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Drew Schiller, making the score 14-3 at halftime.
Kellom was a bright spot for the Panthers, rushing for 80 yards on 14 carries, but the Eastern Illinois offense repeatedly stalled in critical situations.
The second half became a defensive struggle. Tennessee Tech’s offense was unable to add to its total, while Eastern Illinois squandered multiple opportunities. In the third quarter, the Panthers drove deep into Golden Eagles territory, but a 33-yard field goal attempt by Schiller was blocked by H. Rigsby.
The Panthers’ best chance to close the gap came early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Cole LaCrue of Broomfield, Colorado, drove the team to the Tennessee Tech 18-yard line. However, on a critical play, LaCrue was hit in the backfield by Theron Gaines of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, causing a fumble that Gaines recovered and returned 10 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score extended the Golden Eagles’ lead to 21-3 with 3:50 remaining.
LaCrue finished 15 of 31 for 174 yards and added 48 rushing yards, but was consistently harassed by the Tennessee Tech pass rush. His primary target was tight end Alex Herrera of Linden, California, who hauled in 7 receptions for 88 yards.
Eastern Illinois managed a late consolation touchdown with 1:16 left on the clock, as LaCrue found DeAirious Smith on an 18-yard scoring pass. The subsequent two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the final score at 21-9.
The Tennessee Tech defense was the story of the game, intercepting LaCrue once, with the pick coming from safety Kaleb Purdy of St. Peters, Missouri, and consistently generating pressure. The unit repeatedly turned away Eastern Illinois drives that ventured into scoring position, preserving the lead built by the first-quarter outburst.
With the victory, Tennessee Tech continues its dream season and will look ahead to a road test against Kentucky on Nov. 15. Eastern Illinois, meanwhile, will travel to face Lindenwood on the same date.
