Murray State at Northern Iowa
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — Bill Jackson rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns as Northern Iowa pulled away in the second half to defeat Murray State 31-14 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
The Panthers, who led only 14-14 at halftime, used a dominant ground game and a stifling second-half defensive performance to secure the victory. Northern Iowa improved to 3-7 overall, while Murray State remained winless at 0-10.
Jackson, a running back from Saint Louis, was the workhorse for the Panthers, carrying the ball 18 times and finding the end zone on runs of 2, 35, and 14 yards. His backfield mate, Harrison Bey-Buie from Bettendorf, Iowa, added 90 yards on 15 carries, providing a consistent rushing threat that the Racers’ defense could not contain.
The game was a tale of two halves. Northern Iowa drew first blood late in the opening quarter with Jackson’s 2-yard plunge, but Murray State quarterback Kaleb Bailey answered in the second quarter. The Houston native connected with Darius Cannon on a 54-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7.
Later in the second quarter, Jackson broke free for a 35-yard scoring run to put the Panthers back on top. The Racers responded with a methodical drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown run from Jawaun Northington, sending the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 14-14.
The second half belonged entirely to Northern Iowa. The Panthers’ defense clamped down, holding the Racers scoreless and forcing two critical turnovers on downs and a key fourth-quarter interception by safety Calvin Jaworski of Grinnell, Iowa.
Northern Iowa reclaimed the lead for good midway through the third quarter on a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jaxon Dailey to JC Roque Jr. The Pleasant Hill, Iowa, native was efficient through the air, completing 8 of 11 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, and added 75 rushing yards on 13 carries.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers extended their lead with a 45-yard field goal from kicker Max Bartachek of Waukee, Iowa. Jackson then put the game out of reach with his third touchdown, a 14-yard run with 6:50 remaining to seal the 31-14 final.
For Murray State, the loss extended a difficult season. Quarterback Kaleb Bailey was a dual threat, rushing for 96 yards and passing for 113 yards and a touchdown, but the Racers’ offense stalled after halftime. Jawaun Northington contributed 80 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
The Panthers’ victory defied the pregame spread, which had installed Murray State as a 13.5-point underdog. The total score of 45 points fell under the over/under line of 50.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a higher-scoring affair with a final of Northern Iowa 42, Murray State 27, while its ELO system gave the Panthers a 91.5 percent probability to win.
Northern Iowa travels to face North Dakota State next Saturday. Murray State returns home to host North Dakota.
