Northern Iowa Pulls Away From Murray State for Home Victory
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — The Northern Iowa Panthers methodically wore down a winless Murray State squad, pulling away in the second half for a 31-14 victory on Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
The game was a tale of two halves, with the Racers hanging tough through two quarters before the Panthers’ ground game and defensive adjustments took over after halftime. The win improved Northern Iowa’s record to 3-7 across all competitions, while Murray State’s difficult season continued, dropping them to 0-10.
Northern Iowa set the tone early with a dominant running game, but it was Murray State who struck first in an explosive second-quarter sequence. Trailing 7-0, Racers quarterback Kaleb Bailey, a Houston native, connected with receiver Darius Cannon on a 54-yard touchdown pass with 12:53 remaining in the first half. The play electrified the visiting sideline and tied the game.
The Racers’ offense, which had struggled to find consistency, then put together its most impressive drive of the afternoon. A heavy dose of running back Jawaun Northington, who finished with 80 yards on 10 carries, moved the ball deep into Panthers territory. Northington capped the 12-play, 99-yard march with a 12-yard touchdown run, giving Murray State a surprising 14-7 lead.
That advantage was short-lived. Northern Iowa answered immediately, needing just four plays to cover 79 yards. The drive was punctuated by a 35-yard touchdown run by Bill Jackson, knotting the score at 14-14 with 10:22 left in the half. The two teams remained deadlocked through a back-and-forth second quarter and entered the locker rooms tied.
Any momentum Murray State carried into the break was quickly extinguished. The Panthers received the second-half kickoff and embarked on a marathon 16-play, 86-yard drive that consumed nearly seven minutes of the third quarter. The methodical possession was kept alive by the efficient play of quarterback Jaxon Dailey and the powerful running of Jackson and Harrison Bey-Buie. It culminated in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Dailey to JC Roque Jr., giving Northern Iowa a lead it would not relinquish.
The Panthers’ defense, which had been vulnerable in the first half, stiffened considerably after halftime. They began to contain the dual-threat ability of Bailey, who had gashed them for 96 rushing yards, and forced critical mistakes. The turning point came early in the fourth quarter when, leading 24-14, Northern Iowa’s Calvin Jaworski intercepted a Bailey pass at midfield to snuff out a potential Murray State rally.
Northern Iowa sealed the victory with another sustained drive, this one ending with Jackson’s third touchdown of the day, a 14-yard run with 6:50 remaining in the game. The Panthers’ offense was a model of ball control in the second half, relying almost exclusively on a rushing attack that amassed 308 yards.
Jackson was the workhorse for Northern Iowa, carrying the ball 18 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Bey-Buie added 90 yards on 15 carries, providing a formidable one-two punch. Dailey, a Pleasant Hill native, managed the game effectively, completing 8 of 11 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown while adding 75 yards on the ground.
For Murray State, Bailey’s legs were the primary weapon, but the passing game never found a consistent rhythm. Beyond the long touchdown to Cannon, who finished with 77 receiving yards, the Racers’ aerial attack was stifled. Northington’s strong performance on the ground was a bright spot, but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers’ second-half surge.
The loss extends a trying season for Murray State, which will look for its first win next Saturday when it hosts North Dakota. Northern Iowa, meanwhile, will hit the road for a tough matchup against North Dakota State.
