Southeastern Louisiana at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, Lamar edged Southeastern Louisiana 14-12 on Saturday at Provost Umphrey Stadium to improve its season record.

The game, a low-scoring affair characterized by stout defensive stands and missed offensive opportunities, was a stark contrast to the high-scoring shootout predicted by statistical models. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Southeastern Louisiana 38, Lamar 33, but the defenses dominated from the outset.

After a scoreless first quarter, Lamar broke through just before halftime. The Cardinals engineered a methodical drive in the final minutes of the second quarter, culminating in a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Robert Coleman to tight end JaCorey Hyder with 21 seconds remaining. Ben Woodard’s successful point-after kick gave Lamar a 7-0 lead at the intermission.

Southeastern Louisiana responded after the break, chipping into the lead with a pair of field goals from Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez. He connected from 50 yards midway through the third quarter and added a 29-yard kick later in the period, pulling the Lions within a single point at 7-6.

Lamar answered with what proved to be the decisive score early in the fourth quarter. A sustained drive was capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by running back Major Bowden. Woodard’s extra point extended the Cardinals’ lead to 14-6 with 12:37 left in the game.

The Lions mounted a late comeback attempt. A trick play resulted in a 22-yard touchdown run by punter Jack Hunter with 7:23 remaining. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, Southeastern Louisiana’s attempt failed, leaving the score at 14-12.

Lamar’s defense and ground game sealed the victory in the final minutes. The Cardinals forced a turnover on downs with under a minute to play after a key interception by defensive back Mar Mar Evans earlier in the quarter had stifled another Lions drive. Lamar’s offense, led by Bowden’s workhorse performance, was able to run out the clock.

Bowden was the offensive engine for the Cardinals, carrying the ball 23 times for 79 yards and the crucial fourth-quarter touchdown. Coleman, the Lamar quarterback from Riverside, California, efficiently managed the game, completing 7 of 11 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

For Southeastern Louisiana, running back Deantre Jackson was a bright spot, gashing the Lamar defense for 146 yards on 14 carries. The Lions’ quarterback play was less effective, as Carson Camp and Kyle Lowe combined to complete just 5 of 15 passes for 56 yards.

With the win, Lamar improves to 8-2 overall. The Cardinals travel to face Stephen F. Austin next Saturday. Southeastern Louisiana falls to 7-3 and will look to rebound on the road at Incarnate Word next Saturday.
