Lamar Edges Southeastern Louisiana in Defensive Struggle
BEAUMONT, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, the Lamar Cardinals edged the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 14-12 on Saturday at Provost Umphrey Stadium, bolstering their position atop the conference standings.
The contest, played on Nov. 8, 2025, was a far cry from the offensive shootout forecast by statistical models, which had predicted a high-scoring affair favoring Southeastern Louisiana. Instead, the game was defined by stout defensive stands, critical red zone stops, and a game-sealing turnover in the final minutes.
Lamar improved its season record to eight wins and two losses, while Southeastern Louisiana fell to seven wins and three losses.
The first half was a grueling battle for every yard. Both offenses sputtered, with the teams combining for nine punts before either found the scoreboard. The Lions, despite moving the ball effectively at times behind the powerful running of Deantre Jackson, were repeatedly turned away by the Cardinals’ defense. Jackson finished the game with a remarkable 146 rushing yards on 14 carries, but his efforts yielded no touchdowns.
The deadlock was finally broken just before halftime. Lamar quarterback Robert Coleman, a 6-foot, 190-pound junior from Riverside, California, engineered a methodical 80-yard drive in the final minutes of the second quarter. The possession was kept alive by a key 24-yard completion from Coleman to Britain Simmons and was capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from Coleman to tight end JaCorey Hyder with 21 seconds remaining in the half. Ben Woodard’s successful point-after kick gave the Cardinals a 7-0 lead at the intermission.
Southeastern Louisiana responded after the break by leaning on its ground game. Jackson ripped off runs of 12 and 20 yards to quickly move the Lions into Lamar territory. When the drive stalled, Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez connected on a 50-yard field goal to put the Lions on the board, trimming the deficit to 7-3.
The Lions’ defense then provided a pivotal turnover. On Lamar’s ensuing possession, a fumble by running back Xavier Coleman was recovered by Southeastern Louisiana’s Joshua Randall, giving the Lions excellent field position at the Lamar 24-yard line. The Cardinals’ defense, however, stiffened once more, forcing another field goal attempt. Garcia Rodriguez was true from 29 yards, making the score 7-6 late in the third quarter.
Lamar answered with the most decisive drive of the game, a 15-play, 71-yard march that consumed over seven minutes of clock in the fourth quarter. The drive was powered almost exclusively by the running of Major Bowden, who carried the ball 10 times on the possession. Bowden, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound back from Waco, Texas, finally plunged into the end zone from one yard out to extend Lamar’s lead. Woodard’s extra point made it 14-6 with 12:37 remaining.
Southeastern Louisiana’s hopes were momentarily dashed on the next play from scrimmage when Lamar defensive back Mar Mar Evans intercepted a Kyle Lowe pass. The Lions’ defense held firm, forcing a missed 48-yard field goal by Woodard to keep it a one-possession game.
The Lions then mounted their most dramatic drive. A 44-yard burst by Jackson set up a wild sequence that culminated in a 22-yard touchdown run by punter Jack Hunter on a fake special teams play. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, Southeastern Louisiana’s attempt failed, leaving the score at 14-12 with 7:23 left.
Lamar’s offense then took control, embarking on a clock-draining drive that pushed deep into Southeastern Louisiana territory. The Lions’ last hope emerged when Khalid Moore forced and recovered a fumble from Bowden at the Lions’ 31-yard line with 1:10 left.
The Lions drove to their own 38-yard line, but the Cardinals’ defense sealed the victory with a final stop on fourth down. Lamar was able to run out the remaining seconds to secure the hard-fought victory.
Coleman finished an efficient 7-of-11 passing for 86 yards and one touchdown for Lamar, while Bowden was the workhorse, rushing for 79 yards and a score on 23 carries. For Southeastern Louisiana, quarterback Carson Camp of Bloomington, Illinois, was 5-of-11 for 56 yards and added 15 yards on the ground, but the offense could not finish its drives with touchdowns against a relentless Lamar defense.
Lamar travels to face Stephen F. Austin next Saturday, while Southeastern Louisiana visits Incarnate Word.
