Prairie View at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — Cameron Peters delivered a record-setting performance, throwing for five touchdowns and 394 yards to lead the Prairie View A&M Panthers to a dominant 48-5 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Saturday at Louis Crews Stadium.

The Panthers’ offense exploded after a slow start, scoring 13 points in the second quarter, 14 in the third, and 21 in the fourth to turn a close game into a lopsided affair. The Bulldogs’ only points came from a David Faulk 33-yard field goal in the first quarter and a safety in the second.

Peters, a quarterback from Missouri City, Texas, was remarkably efficient, completing 17 of 22 passes. His primary target was Jyzaiah Rockwell, who hauled in eight catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns. The connection between Peters and Rockwell produced scoring plays of 39, 27, and 9 yards, dismantling the Alabama A&M secondary.

Prairie View’s ground game complemented the aerial assault, with Shadrick Byrd rushing for 75 yards and a late touchdown. Andre Dennis also contributed a versatile performance, catching four passes for 89 yards and a score, and adding an 18-yard rushing touchdown.

The Panthers improved their season record to 7-3, while Alabama A&M fell to 4-6.

The game began as a defensive struggle. Alabama A&M’s opening drive, fueled by a 40-yard run from Isaiah Nwokenkwo, stalled in the red zone, forcing the Bulldogs to settle for Faulk’s field goal and an early 3-0 lead. Prairie View’s first several possessions ended with a missed field goal and a turnover on downs.

The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. Peters found Ja’Koby Banks for a 39-yard touchdown strike to give the Panthers their first lead. Just before halftime, Peters and Rockwell connected for their first score of the day, a 39-yard pass with no time remaining on the clock, sending Prairie View into the break with a 13-5 advantage.

The Panthers picked up where they left off after halftime. Peters hit Rockwell for a 27-yard touchdown to cap their first drive of the third quarter. Later in the period, the duo connected again, this time from 9 yards out, extending the lead to 27-5.

The fourth quarter saw the Panthers pour it on. Dennis took an end-around 18 yards for a touchdown, and on the next offensive series, Peters launched a 56-yard scoring pass to Chaney Fitzgeraled. Byrd capped the scoring with a 1-yard plunge with 3:26 remaining.

Alabama A&M’s offense struggled throughout the contest. Quarterback Eric Handley of Fultondale completed 18 of 36 passes for just 101 yards. The Bulldogs’ rushing attack was largely contained outside of Nwokenkwo’s 62 yards on five carries. The team punted 11 times for a total of 480 yards.

The Panthers’ defense was relentless, consistently pressuring Handley and stifling the run game. The unit recorded multiple tackles for loss and held Alabama A&M to just two scoring drives, one of which resulted in only a field goal.

The final score was a stark contrast to the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a narrow 42-40 Prairie View victory.

Prairie View A&M will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff next Saturday. Alabama A&M will try to regroup at home against Florida A&M.
