Tulsa at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Atlantic Owls used a dominant second-quarter surge and a stifling defensive performance to defeat the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 40-21 on Saturday at Flagler Credit Union Stadium.

Quarterback Caden Veltkamp orchestrated a potent offensive attack for the Owls, while the defense forced two critical first-half turnovers and consistently harassed Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes.

The game began as a defensive struggle before Florida Atlantic broke through with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Veltkamp to Jayshon Platt with six minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The score capped a drive that followed a Tulsa turnover on downs, giving the Owls a 10-0 lead after an early field goal.

Tulsa responded with a pair of field goals from S. Morgan in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 10-6. The Golden Hurricane offense, however, could not sustain momentum against a relentless Florida Atlantic pass rush.

The Owls seized control of the game with a 21-point explosion in the final six minutes of the first half. Veltkamp connected with Easton Messer on a 44-yard touchdown strike. The momentum then swung decisively in the Owls’ favor when cornerback Damarius McGhee returned a fumble 95 yards for a touchdown after Tulsa had driven deep into Florida Atlantic territory.

Just before halftime, Veltkamp engineered a quick drive, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown pass to Messer with 14 seconds remaining, sending the Owls into the break with a commanding 31-6 advantage.

Veltkamp, a Bowling Green, Kentucky native, finished an efficient 21 of 29 for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Messer was his primary target, hauling in six catches for 83 yards and all three of Veltkamp’s scoring throws. Platt added five receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. The ground game was led by Kaden Shields-Dutton, who rushed for 107 yards on 10 carries.

Tulsa showed signs of life after halftime, scoring 12 points in the third quarter. Hayes scored on a 7-yard run, and A. Allen added a 2-yard touchdown plunge. Both two-point conversion attempts failed, leaving the Golden Hurricane trailing 34-18.

A fourth-quarter field goal from Morgan brought Tulsa within 34-21, but any hope of a comeback was extinguished when Florida Atlantic backup quarterback Zach Gibson entered the game and threw a 30-yard touchdown to Platt, followed by a 9-yard scoring pass to Messer to seal the victory.

Hayes, from Brentwood, Tennessee, battled throughout for Tulsa, completing 24 of 46 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team with 47 rushing yards. He was sacked multiple times and threw two interceptions, with Terez Reid and Chris Keys Jr. coming down with the picks for the Owls.

The Florida Atlantic defense was the story of the game, with linebackers Leon Hart Jr. and Tyler Stolsky combining for 23 tackles. The defensive line consistently pressured Hayes, with Deshaun Batiste recording two sacks and Josh Roberts and Bryce Langston each adding one.

With the win, Florida Atlantic improves to 4-5 on the season, while Tulsa falls to 2-7. The Owls travel to face Tulane next Saturday, while Tulsa returns home to host Oregon State.
