Florida Atlantic Rides Strong Second Quarter to Victory Over Tulsa

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant second-quarter surge and a stifling defensive performance, the Florida Atlantic Owls defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 40-21 on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Flagler Credit Union Stadium.

The Owls, now 4-5, rode a 21-point explosion in the second period to seize control of the game, capitalizing on a series of costly Tulsa mistakes to turn a close contest into a comfortable victory. The Golden Hurricane, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 2-7, plagued by offensive inefficiency and untimely turnovers.

Florida Atlantic quarterback Caden Veltkamp, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound sophomore from Bowling Green, Kentucky, orchestrated the offensive onslaught with precision. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball effectively to a talented receiving corps. His primary targets, Easton Messer and Jayshon Platt, proved to be matchup afternoonmares for the Tulsa secondary. Messer hauled in six catches for 83 yards and three touchdowns, while Platt was the big-play threat, amassing 114 yards and a touchdown on five receptions.

The Owls’ ground game was equally potent, led by Kaden Shields-Dutton. The running back from Orlando gashed the Tulsa defense for 107 yards on just 10 carries, including a 50-yard burst in the first quarter that set up an early scoring opportunity.

The game began as a defensive struggle. After Tulsa’s opening drive ended with a Terez Reid interception, the Owls capitalized with a 35-yard field goal from Garrison Smith. The Golden Hurricane defense held firm initially, forcing a pair of turnovers on downs, but the dam broke late in the first quarter. Veltkamp connected with Platt on a 47-yard touchdown strike, giving Florida Atlantic a 10-0 lead and momentum they would not relinquish.

The second quarter was a disaster for Tulsa. After managing a pair of field goals from Sam Morgan to cut the deficit to 10-6, the Golden Hurricane offense imploded. A promising drive deep into Florida Atlantic territory ended when Baylor Hayes was sacked and fumbled. Owls cornerback Damarius McGhee scooped the ball and raced 95 yards for a defensive touchdown, a devastating swing that extended the lead to 24-6.

Just before halftime, the Owls delivered the knockout blow. After a Chris Keys Jr. interception gave them the ball back with under a minute to play, Veltkamp engineered a quick scoring drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Messer with 14 seconds remaining. The score sent Florida Atlantic into the locker room with a commanding 31-6 advantage.

Tulsa showed signs of life in the third quarter. Quarterback Baylor Hayes, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound freshman from Brentwood, Tennessee, used his legs to get the Golden Hurricane into the end zone, scrambling for a 7-yard touchdown. He later engineered a drive that was finished by a 2-yard Allen rush. However, both two-point conversion attempts failed, leaving the score at 34-18. Hayes finished with 235 yards passing, one touchdown, and two interceptions, adding 47 yards and a score on the ground.

Any hope of a miraculous Tulsa comeback was extinguished early in the fourth quarter. Backup Owls quarterback Zach Gibson, in for a brief series, found Messer for a 9-yard touchdown pass, Messer’s third of the day, to push the lead to 40-18. Tulsa could only answer with another Morgan field goal, the final points of the game.

While the Florida Atlantic offense put up impressive numbers, the defense was the story. The unit harassed Hayes all afternoon, sacking him five times. Deshaun Batiste led the charge with two sacks, while Josh Roberts, Wilky Denaud, and Bryce Langston each added one. The secondary, led by safeties Jayden Sweeney and Terez Reid, who each had an interception, consistently broke up passes and limited Tulsa’s downfield opportunities. Linebackers Leon Hart Jr. and Tyler Stolsky were everywhere, combining for 23 total tackles.

The victory moves Florida Atlantic to 4-5 as they look ahead to a road contest at Tulane next Saturday. Tulsa, now 2-7, will return home to host Oregon State, searching for answers after a defeat that saw them fall short of both the pregame spread, where they were 3.5-point underdogs, and the statistical projections, which had favored the Owls with a nearly 80 percent probability to win. The combined point total of 61 fell under the over/under line of 62.5.
