UAB at Rice
HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Rice Owls used a dominant third quarter and a stifling defensive effort to overcome an early deficit and defeat the UAB Blazers 24-17 on Saturday afternoon at Rice Stadium.
The victory pushes Rice to an even 5-5 record across all competitions, while UAB falls to 3-6.
UAB struck first, capitalizing on an early Rice turnover. On the Owls’ opening possession, quarterback Chase Jenkins fumbled, and UAB’s Tylan McNichols recovered at the Rice 34-yard line. Six plays later, Blazers quarterback Ryder Burton connected with Iverson Hooks on a 26-yard touchdown pass to give UAB a 7-0 lead with 11:08 remaining in the first quarter.
Rice responded with a methodical 15-play, 62-yard drive that chewed over six minutes off the clock. The drive was kept alive by the powerful running of Quinton Jackson and D’Andre Hardeman Jr., and was capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins to Tyson Thompson, tying the game at 7-7.
The Owls took their first lead early in the second quarter. A 13-play, 65-yard drive culminated in a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Hardeman, putting Rice ahead 14-7. UAB answered with a 14-play drive of its own, but it stalled at the Rice 2-yard line, forcing the Blazers to settle for a 20-yard Jonah Delange field goal, making the score 14-10.
UAB regained the momentum just before halftime. After getting the ball back with 50 seconds left, Burton engineered a quick drive, finishing it with a 21-yard touchdown strike to Brandon Hawkins Jr. as time expired in the half. The score sent the Blazers into the locker room with a 17-14 lead.
The second half belonged entirely to Rice. The Owls’ defense shut out UAB, while the offense put together two scoring drives in the third quarter. Rice took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 75 yards on 11 plays, with Jenkins finding Aaron Turner on a 3-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead, 21-17.
After forcing a UAB punt, the Owls put together another long drive, this one ending with a 38-yard Enock Gota field goal to extend their advantage to 24-17.
UAB had multiple opportunities in the fourth quarter to tie the game but could not solve the Rice defense. The Blazers’ final drive began at their own 20-yard line with 44 seconds remaining. Burton managed to move the offense to the Rice 45, but his final four pass attempts fell incomplete, sealing the victory for the Owls.
Burton finished the game 18 of 34 for 213 yards and two touchdowns for UAB. Hooks was his primary target, hauling in six catches for 89 yards and a score.
For Rice, the offense was led by its ground game. Jenkins was an efficient 11 of 15 for 41 yards and two touchdowns through the air, but his impact was greater on the ground, where he rushed for 56 yards. Jackson was the workhorse, carrying the ball 22 times for 81 yards.
The Owls’ defense was the story, consistently pressuring Burton and stifling UAB’s attempts to mount a comeback. Andrew Awe led the charge with seven tackles and two sacks, while Chibby Nwajuaku added four tackles and 1.5 sacks. The unit recorded multiple sacks and quarterback hurries, disrupting the Blazers’ offensive rhythm throughout the second half.
UAB’s defense was led by Jonathan Allen, who recorded a game-high 10 tackles and a sack, and Devin Hightower, who added nine tackles.
The final score of 41 combined points went under the pregame over/under line of 52.5. Rice, which had been a slight pregame underdog at +1.5, defied the spread. The Owls also outperformed the projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 35-33 Rice victory and whose ELO system gave Rice a 71.1% probability to win.
