Rice Outlasts UAB for Homecoming Victory

HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by opportunistic defense and a dominant ground attack, the Rice Owls grinded out a 24-17 victory over the UAB Blazers on Saturday afternoon at Rice Stadium, climbing back to .500 on the season.

The Owls improved to 5-5 overall, while the Blazers fell to 3-6, their postseason hopes growing increasingly slim.

Rice’s win, which defied pregame projections that favored UAB by 1.5 points, was fueled by a relentless rushing offense that amassed 186 yards and controlled the clock. Quarterback Chase Jenkins of Katy, Texas, was the catalyst, efficiently managing the game by completing 11 of 15 passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading the team with 56 rushing yards on 12 carries. The Owls’ backfield committee of Quinton Jackson, who rushed for 81 yards on 22 attempts, and D’Andre Hardeman Jr., who punched in a touchdown, kept the chains moving consistently.

The game began with a sudden shift in momentum. After forcing a UAB punt on the opening drive, Rice quarterback Chase Jenkins fumbled on his own 34-yard line, with UAB’s Tylan McNichols recovering. The Blazers capitalized immediately, as quarterback Ryder Burton connected with Iverson Hooks on a 26-yard touchdown pass just two plays later to take a 7-0 lead.

Rice responded with a methodical 14-play, 62-yard drive that consumed over five minutes, culminating in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins to Tyson Thompson, tying the game at 7-7.

The Owls took their first lead early in the second quarter, capping a 19-play, 62-yard marathon drive that bled over eight minutes off the clock. Hardeman plunged into the end zone from one yard out to put Rice ahead 14-7. UAB answered with a 14-play drive of its own, but the Rice defense stiffened inside the 5-yard line, forcing the Blazers to settle for a 20-yard Jonah Delange field goal, making the score 14-10.

Just before halftime, UAB’s Burton engineered a dramatic two-minute drill. With 50 seconds remaining, he drove the Blazers from their own 34 down to the Rice 11. After a sack pushed them back to the 21, Burton found Brandon Hawkins Jr. on a 21-yard touchdown strike as time expired in the half, sending UAB into the locker room with a 17-14 lead.

The second half belonged entirely to the Owls. Rice received the kickoff and embarked on a decisive 13-play, 75-yard drive, finished by a 3-yard Jenkins touchdown pass to Aaron Turner, reclaiming the lead at 21-17. Later in the third quarter, a short UAB punt set up Rice for a 38-yard Enock Gota field goal, extending the advantage to 24-17.

UAB’s offense, which moved the ball effectively at times, could not find an answer in the second half. The Blazers’ final four possessions all ended in punts or on downs, with the last desperate drive stalling at the Rice 45-yard line as Burton’s final heave into the end zone fell incomplete.

Burton finished 18 of 34 for 213 yards and two touchdowns for UAB, with Iverson Hooks being his primary target, hauling in six catches for 89 yards and a score. However, the Blazers’ rushing attack was stifled, managing only 73 net yards.

The Rice defense was the story of the second half, consistently pressuring Burton and shutting down UAB’s offensive rhythm. Linebackers Andrew Awe and Jack Kane each recorded seven tackles, with Awe adding two critical sacks. The defensive line, led by Chibby Nwajuaku and his 1.5 sacks, along with consistent pressure from Tony Anyanwu and Joseph Mutombo, made life difficult for the UAB offensive front all evening.

UAB’s defense was led by a 10-tackle, one-sack performance from Jonathan Allen and nine tackles each from Devin Hightower and Tylan McNichols, but they were on the field for extended periods due to Rice’s ball-control offense.

The victory moves Rice one step closer to bowl eligibility as they prepare to host North Texas next. UAB, needing to win out for a chance at the postseason, will look to regroup when they return home to face North Texas next Saturday.
