Texas State at Louisiana
LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth shootout that defied pregame projections, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns outlasted the Texas State Bobcats 42-39 on Saturday at Cajun Field in a game decided by a dominant second-quarter surge and a final, frantic comeback that fell just short.
The contest, which featured a combined 81 points, easily surpassed the over/under line of 63.5, though the final margin was tighter than anticipated as Louisiana entered as a 3.5-point favorite.
The game began as a defensive struggle before quickly igniting. Texas State struck first with a 25-yard field goal from Tyler Robles midway through the opening quarter. The Bobcats then extended their lead on a spectacular 54-yard touchdown run by L. Pare, capping a drive that saw quarterback Brad Jackson efficiently move the offense down the field.
Louisiana answered on its ensuing possession. Quarterback Lunch Winfield engineered a methodical drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Shelton Sampson Jr. to cut the deficit to 10-7.
The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to the Ragin’ Cajuns. Louisiana’s offense exploded for 28 points while its defense stiffened, completely flipping the game’s momentum. The onslaught started with Winfield connecting with tight end Caden Jensen on a 27-yard scoring strike. The Louisiana defense then made a critical play, as safety Kody Jackson intercepted a Brad Jackson pass, setting up a short field. Running back Bill Davis capitalized with a 12-yard touchdown run to give Louisiana its first lead at 21-10.
The Ragin’ Cajuns weren’t done. Winfield later found Sampson Jr. for another touchdown, this one a 12-yard reception that was initially reviewed but upheld, extending the lead to 28-10. Texas State managed a response just before halftime, with Jackson hitting tight end Titus Lyons for a 24-yard touchdown to make it 28-17. But Louisiana executed a flawless two-minute drill, capped by a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Winfield as time expired in the half, sending the teams to the locker room with the Ragin’ Cajuns ahead 35-17.
The third quarter saw the offenses slow, with the only points coming from a 24-yard Robles field goal for Texas State, trimming the lead to 35-20.
Louisiana appeared to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Winfield scored his third rushing touchdown of the day, this time from 3 yards out, to push the lead to 42-20.
Refusing to quit, Texas State and Brad Jackson mounted a furious comeback. The Bobcats immediately responded with a quick-strike drive that ended with a 49-yard touchdown run by B. Sparks. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 42-26.
The Bobcat defense then came up with a crucial turnover, as safety Michael Boudoin III intercepted a Winfield pass. On the very next play, Jackson found Sparks again, this time for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Another failed two-point conversion kept the deficit at 10 points, 42-32.
After a defensive stop, Texas State got the ball back and Jackson engineered another scoring drive. He connected with receiver Chris Dawn Jr. on a 21-yard touchdown pass with just over three minutes remaining, bringing the Bobcats within a field goal at 42-39.
The Bobcats attempted an onside kick, but Louisiana recovered. The Ragin’ Cajuns then managed to run out the clock, with Winfield and Davis picking up key first downs to seal the narrow victory.
Statistically, the game was a showcase for the quarterbacks. Texas State’s Brad Jackson was brilliant in the losing effort, completing 26 of 33 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 15 yards. Louisiana’s Lunch Winfield was a dual-threat force, accounting for four total touchdowns. He passed for 192 yards and three scores and was the team’s leading rusher with 49 yards and another touchdown on the ground.
With the win, Louisiana improves to 4-6 on the season, while Texas State falls to 3-6. The Ragin’ Cajuns travel to face Arkansas State next Thursday, while the Bobcats are set to visit Southern Mississippi on Saturday.
