Louisiana Holds Off Texas State Rally in High-Scoring Shootout

LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth shootout that defied both pregame projections and defensive game plans, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns outlasted the Texas State Bobcats 42-39 on Saturday night at Cajun Field.

The game, which featured a staggering 81 combined points, saw Louisiana’s offense explode for 28 points in the second quarter to seize control, only to have Texas State mount a furious 19-point fourth-quarter rally that fell just short.

The victory improved Louisiana’s record to 4-6 on the season, while Texas State fell to 3-6.

The contest was a showcase for the two starting quarterbacks, who combined for nearly 550 yards of total offense. Louisiana’s Lunch Winfield, a Lutcher, Louisiana, native, was a dual-threat force, accounting for four touchdowns. He completed 17 of 27 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing 18 times for 49 yards and another score.

Not to be outdone, Texas State’s Brad Jackson from San Antonio put on a prolific passing display. He completed 26 of 33 attempts for 360 yards and three touchdowns, guiding an offense that amassed over 500 total yards but was ultimately undone by a disastrous second quarter.

The game began as a defensive struggle, with Texas State’s defense forcing a three-and-out on Louisiana’s first possession. The Bobcats then marched down the field, settling for a 25-yard field goal from Tyler Robles to take an early 3-0 lead.

After the teams traded punts, Louisiana’s offense found its rhythm. A methodical drive, powered by the running of Bill Davis and Zylan Perry, was capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Winfield to Shelton Sampson Jr., giving the Ragin’ Cajuns a 7-3 advantage.

Texas State responded immediately. Jackson connected with receiver B. Sparks on a 62-yard deep ball, setting up a spectacular 54-yard touchdown run by L. Pare to reclaim the lead at 10-7 as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to Louisiana. The Ragin’ Cajuns erupted for 28 points, turning a three-point deficit into a 35-17 halftime lead. The onslaught started with a 27-yard touchdown strike from Winfield to tight end Caden Jensen.

On the ensuing Texas State possession, Jackson was intercepted by Louisiana safety Kody Jackson, setting up a short field. A few plays later, Davis powered in from 12 yards out to extend the lead to 21-10.

After a Texas State punt, the Ragin’ Cajuns struck again. Winfield engineered another efficient drive, culminating in a 12-yard touchdown pass to Sampson Jr., his second of the game, making it 28-10.

The Bobcats showed a flicker of life just before halftime as Jackson found tight end Titus Lyons for a 24-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 28-17. But Louisiana had an answer, executing a masterful two-minute drill. Winfield methodically moved his team down the field and capped the half with a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown, sending the Ragin’ Cajuns into the locker room with a commanding 35-17 advantage.

The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with the only scoring coming from a 24-yard Robles field goal for Texas State, tightening the score to 35-20.

Louisiana appeared to deliver the knockout punch early in the fourth quarter. A sustained drive, featuring more hard running from Davis, was finished by Winfield on a 3-yard scoring run, pushing the lead to 42-20 with 13:02 remaining.

Undeterred, the Bobcats mounted a stunning comeback. Jackson led a quick scoring drive that ended with B. Sparks taking an end-around 49 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 42-26.

The Texas State defense then came up with a crucial turnover, as safety Michael Boudoin III intercepted a Winfield pass. On the very next play, Jackson hit Sparks for a 38-yard touchdown strike. Another failed two-point conversion kept the deficit at 10 points, 42-32.

After forcing a Louisiana punt, the Bobcats drove the length of the field. Jackson’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Dawn Jr. with 3:12 left brought Texas State within a field goal at 42-39.

The Bobcats’ defense needed one final stop, but Louisiana’s offense and its powerful running game would not be denied. The Ragin’ Cajuns, behind the running of Winfield and Davis, successfully ran out the final 3:12 of the clock, converting two critical third downs to secure the victory.

For Louisiana, Sampson Jr. was Jackson’s primary target, hauling in five catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Davis was a workhorse in the backfield, rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Texas State’s Sparks was a dynamic weapon, amassing significant receiving and rushing yards, while Dawn Jr. caught seven passes for 89 yards and a score. Defensively, Ryan Nolan led the Bobcats with 10 tackles.

The game total of 81 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 63.5, though Louisiana failed to cover the 3.5-point spread. The result was in line with the final score projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 42-32 Louisiana victory.
