Missouri State rallies to stun Liberty with late touchdown
LYNCHBURG, Va. (Interstat) — In a stunning upset defying both the oddsmakers and the statistical models, the Missouri State Bears mounted a furious second-half comeback to defeat the Liberty Flames 21-17 on Saturday afternoon at a stunned Williams Stadium.
The Bears, who entered the game as 7.5-point underdogs, were given only a 30 percent chance to win by Interstat’s ELO system, which had projected a 42-15 Liberty victory. Instead, Missouri State erased a 10-point second-half deficit, scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and improve their season record to 6-3. Liberty fell to 4-5.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Liberty controlling the early action and Missouri State dominating the late stages.
Liberty struck first, capitalizing on their opening drive with a methodical, run-heavy march down the field. The Flames needed just seven plays to cover 75 yards, with running back E. Dickens powering in from one yard out for the touchdown with 11:24 remaining in the first quarter. The drive was keyed by a 30-yard completion from quarterback Ethan Vasko to receiver Donte Lee Jr.
The Flames extended their lead in the final seconds of the second quarter. After a drive stalled deep in Missouri State territory, kicker Jay Billingsley connected on a 38-yard field goal as time expired to send Liberty into the locker room with a 10-0 advantage.
The Bears, held scoreless for the entire first half, finally found their offensive rhythm in the third quarter. Quarterback Jacob Clark, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior from Rockwall, Texas, began to find his targets, most notably connecting with Jmariyae Robinson on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 4:47 left in the period. The score cut Liberty’s lead to 10-7 and provided a crucial spark for the visiting team.
Missouri State carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, embarking on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over five minutes of clock. Clark capped the drive himself, scrambling right for a one-yard touchdown run to give the Bears their first lead of the afternoon at 14-10 with 11:54 remaining.
Liberty responded immediately, reclaiming the lead with a 75-yard touchdown drive of their own. The Flames leaned on their ground game, with Vaughn Blue breaking off a 22-yard run and Vasko finishing the possession with a three-yard scoring run to put Liberty back on top, 17-14, with 8:10 left on the clock.
The game then turned on a chaotic play with under two minutes remaining. With Liberty driving and looking to run out the clock, Vasko fumbled on a botched play that resulted in a 17-yard loss. Missouri State’s DJ Wesolak recovered the loose ball but then fumbled it himself during the return, with Liberty’s Caleb Ryan eventually falling on it to retain possession for the Flames.
Despite the reprieve, Liberty’s offense could not secure a first down to ice the game, forcing a punt that gave Missouri State the ball at its own 30-yard line with 1:19 remaining and no timeouts.
Clark then engineered a masterful game-winning drive. He completed five consecutive passes, moving the Bears 70 yards in just 52 seconds. The final strike was a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tristian Gardner with 27 seconds left, silencing the home crowd and sealing the dramatic victory.
Clark finished the game 20-of-33 passing for 286 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. His favorite targets were Gardner, who had five catches for 80 yards and the game-winning score, and Robinson, who caught five passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.
For Liberty, Vasko completed 18 of 35 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown. Lee Jr. was his top receiver with three catches for 57 yards. The Flames’ defense was led by Aidan Vaughan, who recorded six tackles, and Christian Bodnar, who had four tackles and two sacks.
Missouri State’s defense was anchored by Thomas Anderson, who posted a game-high eight tackles, and Dylan Dixson and Jalen Brooks, who each had six tackles.
The Bears will look to build on this victory when they host UTEP next Saturday. Liberty will aim to rebound on the road at Florida International.
