Kennesaw State survives New Mexico State rally for 24‑21 road victory
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Kennesaw State Owls weathered a furious fourth-quarter rally by the New Mexico State Aggies to escape Aggie Memorial Stadium with a 24-21 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls, who exploded for 24 points in the first half, saw their commanding lead nearly vanish completely as the Aggies scored 14 unanswered points in the final quarter. The game was ultimately sealed when New Mexico State kicker Ryan Hawk’s 50-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left with 28 seconds remaining.
Kennesaw State quarterback Amari Odom was the catalyst for the Owls’ early dominance. The 6-foot-5 sophomore from Inglewood, California, orchestrated a near-flawless start, connecting on three touchdown passes in the first 22 minutes of the game. He finished the contest 14-of-30 for 219 yards through the air, adding 20 yards on the ground.
The Owls’ offense operated with ruthless efficiency from the opening whistle. They needed just eight plays to cover 66 yards on their first drive, culminating in a 34-yard touchdown strike from Odom to Gabriel Benyard. The connection proved potent, as Odom found Benyard again for a 23-yard score on Kennesaw State’s next possession, capping a drive set up by a fumble recovery.
The Aggies’ offense, by contrast, sputtered repeatedly in the first half. Quarterback Logan Fife was under constant pressure and the running game found little room against a swarming Kennesaw State defense. The Owls added a 35-yard field goal from B. Williams later in the first quarter to extend their lead to 17-0.
Kennesaw State’s third touchdown came on a spectacular 55-yard deep ball from Odom to Clayton Coppock midway through the second quarter, pushing the advantage to 24-0 and silencing the home crowd.
New Mexico State finally found a spark just before halftime. Fife engineered a 75-yard scoring drive, which was finished by a 28-yard touchdown run from Dijon Stanley, cutting the deficit to 24-7 at the break.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams exchanging punts and turnovers. The Aggies’ defense, led by a standout performance from safety Bernock Iya, began to find its footing. Iya intercepted Odom in the end zone late in the third quarter to snuff out a promising Kennesaw State drive, his first of two picks on the afternoon.
That play seemed to ignite the Aggies’ comeback bid. Fife and the offense finally discovered a rhythm in the fourth quarter. He led a methodical drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Faupel, making it a 24-14 game with 10:35 remaining.
After forcing a quick three-and-out, the Aggies struck again. Fife marched the team down the field, and connected with Faupel for another 2-yard touchdown, this time with 5:28 left on the clock, suddenly pulling New Mexico State within a field goal at 24-21.
The momentum had fully shifted, and it appeared to swing further when Iya intercepted Odom for a second time on the ensuing Kennesaw State possession, giving the Aggies the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead.
However, the Kennesaw State defense, which had bent significantly in the second half, made a critical stand. On the very next play, Fife’s pass was intercepted by I. Paul, giving the ball back to the Owls with 3:33 remaining.
The Owls’ offense managed to burn valuable time off the clock before punting it back to New Mexico State with 1:47 left. Fife then engineered a frantic final drive, moving the Aggies from their own 17-yard line to the Kennesaw State 32-yard line in the final minute. With time for one last play, the Aggies sent out Hawk for the 50-yard game-tying attempt, but the kick missed its mark.
Fife finished with gritty numbers, completing 28 of 46 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked five times and threw two costly interceptions. The Aggies’ defense was led by Iya and linebacker Quincy Davis, who each recorded eight tackles.
For Kennesaw State, the ground game was effective, with Coleman Bennett rushing for 86 yards on 16 carries and Chase Belcher adding 81 yards on 13 attempts. Benyard was the top receiver, hauling in three passes for 74 yards and two scores. Linebacker Baron Hopson and defensive back Kody Jones each had eight tackles for the Owls’ defense.
The victory improves Kennesaw State’s record to 7-2 on the season, while New Mexico State falls to 3-6. The result was a surprise to many, as the Aggies entered the game as 9.5-point favorites and were given a nearly 59 percent probability to win by statistical models. The combined score of 45 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 52.5.
Kennesaw State will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it travels to face Jacksonville State. New Mexico State faces a daunting road test, heading to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
