Jackson State at Florida A&M
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Jackson State’s rushing attack proved unstoppable Saturday as the Tigers amassed over 400 yards on the ground in a dominant 41-16 victory over Florida A&M at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers, who improved to 6-2 overall, were led by a devastating one-two punch in the backfield. Ahmad Miller gashed the Rattlers’ defense for 165 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Donerio Davenport added 112 yards and a score on 16 attempts. The duo set the tone early, consistently finding large running lanes against the Florida A&M defense.
Jackson State quarterback Jared Lockhart, a Charlotte, North Carolina native, efficiently managed the game, completing 5 of 10 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown while adding 37 yards on the ground. His primary highlight was a 42-yard touchdown strike to Nate Rembert in the third quarter.
Florida A&M, which fell to 3-5, struggled to find consistency on offense. Quarterback RJ Johnson III of Atlanta completed 16 of 29 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, but the Rattlers could not sustain drives against a stout Jackson State defense.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with Jackson State holding a 3-0 lead after the first quarter on a 24-yard field goal from Gerardo Baeza. The Tigers extended their lead to 10-3 by halftime after Miller capped a drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds left in the second quarter.
Jackson State broke the game open immediately after halftime. On the first play of the third quarter, Lockhart connected with Rembert for the 42-yard score. On the ensuing kickoff, Jackson State’s B.J. Washington recovered a fumble by Florida A&M’s Kenari Wilcher, setting up a 6-yard Davenport touchdown run just over two minutes later to push the lead to 24-3.
Florida A&M answered with its best drive of the day, a 15-play, 75-yard march culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Jamal Hailey to make it 24-10.
Jackson State responded with a 22-yard field goal from Baeza early in the fourth quarter, followed by a 40-yard touchdown run from Rembert to extend the lead to 34-10. Travis Terrell Jr. added a 12-yard scoring run for the Tigers later in the quarter.
The Rattlers found the end zone once more with 1:53 remaining on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Miles Campbell, but a failed two-point conversion attempt left the final margin at 41-16.
Jackson State’s defense was disruptive throughout, forcing a key turnover and limiting Florida A&M’s rushing attack. For the Rattlers, Wilcher was a bright spot with 75 return yards and 32 receiving yards.
The Tigers will look to continue their winning ways next Saturday when they travel to face Mississippi Valley State. Florida A&M will hit the road to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
