Jackson State Routs Florida A&M Behind Dominant Ground Game

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Jackson State’s ground attack proved unstoppable Saturday as the Tigers amassed over 350 rushing yards in a commanding 41-16 victory over Florida A&M at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers, improving to 6-2 overall, leaned heavily on a two-headed monster at running back. Ahmad Miller gashed the Rattlers’ defense for 165 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Donerio Davenport added 112 yards and a score on 16 attempts. Their dominance allowed Jackson State to control the clock and steadily pull away after a slow start.

Jackson State led just 3-0 after a first quarter defined by missed opportunities and a key turnover. The Tigers opened the game with a methodical drive deep into Florida A&M territory, but quarterback Jared Lockhart fumbled at the Rattlers’ 2-yard line, where it was recovered by Florida A&M defensive back Ah’Mare Lee. The Tigers were forced to settle for a 24-yard Gerardo Baeza field goal on their next possession.

The second quarter saw both teams trade scores. Florida A&M kicker Daniel Porto connected on a 38-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 3-0. Jackson State responded just before halftime, capping a drive highlighted by a 64-yard burst from Miller with a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Miller himself, giving the Tigers a 10-3 lead at the break.

Any hope of a Rattlers comeback was extinguished quickly in the third quarter. On the first play of the second half, Lockhart found Nate Rembert for a 42-yard touchdown strike. On the ensuing kickoff, Florida A&M’s Kenari Wilcher fumbled, and Jackson State’s B.J. Washington recovered, setting up a 6-yard Davenport touchdown run just two plays later. The rapid sequence stretched the lead to 24-3.

Florida A&M quarterback RJ Johnson III answered with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Hailey to make it 24-10, but the Rattlers could not slow the Jackson State rushing attack. The Tigers added a 22-yard Baeza field goal early in the fourth quarter before Rembert broke the game wide open with a 40-yard touchdown run on a sweep, extending the lead to 34-10.

After a 12-yard touchdown run by Jackson State’s Travis Terrell Jr., Johnson III found Miles Campbell for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining for the final margin. A two-point conversion attempt failed.

Lockhart, the Jackson State quarterback, was efficient through the air, completing 5 of 10 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown, and added 37 yards on the ground. Rembert was a dynamic weapon, scoring twice, once through the air and once on the ground, and totaling 88 all-purpose yards.

For Florida A&M, now 3-5, Johnson III completed 16 of 29 passes for 132 yards with two touchdowns and added 31 rushing yards. The Rattlers’ offense struggled to sustain drives for much of the game, often punting after three-and-out possessions. Punter Bobby Engstler was busy, booting six punts for 218 yards.

The Tigers’ defense was stifling, consistently pressuring Johnson III and limiting the Rattlers’ rushing attack to minimal gains. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Florida A&M, while Jackson State rebounds from a narrow 26-24 loss to Grambling the previous week.

Jackson State will travel to face Mississippi Valley State next Saturday. Florida A&M hits the road to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
