Fresno State at Boise State
BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — In a stunning Mountain West Conference upset, the Fresno State Bulldogs dominated the Boise State Broncos 30-7 on Saturday at Albertsons Stadium, defying overwhelming odds and statistical projections.
The Bulldogs’ defense was the story of the game, completely stifling a Boise State offense that was projected by Interstat’s ELO system to have a 94.6 percent chance of victory. The Broncos, who were 17.5-point favorites, managed just a single touchdown and were held scoreless in three quarters.
Fresno State set the tone early with a methodical, run-heavy drive in the first quarter, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Elijah Gilliam. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal from Dylan Lynch.
Boise State’s lone bright spot came late in the second quarter when quarterback Max Cutforth connected with Chase Penry on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Cutforth, a redshirt freshman from Nampa, Idaho, finished the game completing 14 of 29 passes for 106 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Any momentum the Broncos gained from that score was immediately extinguished. Fresno State drove down the field in the final seconds of the half, and Lynch nailed his second field goal to send the Bulldogs into halftime with a 10-7 lead.
The second half belonged entirely to Fresno State. The Bulldogs’ ground game took over, with Brandon Ramirez plunging in for a 3-yard touchdown and Bryson Donelson adding a 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Donelson led the Bulldogs’ rushing attack with 45 yards on 11 carries, while Rayshon Luke provided a spark with 88 yards on 16 attempts.
Fresno State quarterback Carson Conklin of Yorba Linda, California, managed the game effectively, though his passing line was modest, completing 10 of 21 attempts for 35 yards. His primary contribution came on the ground, where the Bulldogs consistently moved the chains.
The Bulldogs’ defense was relentless. They sacked Cutforth four times, with Finn Claypool of Des Moines, Iowa, recording two of them. The secondary came up with two critical interceptions, one by Simeon Harris and another by Tytus Khajavi, which snuffed out any potential Boise State comeback attempts.
Boise State’s offense never found a rhythm. Running back Malik Sherrod of Oxnard, California, provided some early explosiveness with a 44-yard run, finishing with 67 yards on 10 carries, but the Broncos’ passing game was consistently disrupted. The Bulldogs’ Jadon Pearson led all tacklers with 10 stops.
Lynch added two more field goals in the fourth quarter, from 43 and 33 yards, to provide the final margin. The Bulldogs controlled the clock and the line of scrimmage throughout the contest, amassing significant advantages in time of possession and rushing yardage.
With the victory, both teams now hold identical 6-3 records across all competitions. The win marks a significant turnaround for Fresno State, which was shut out 23-0 by San Diego State in its previous outing. The loss is a major setback for Boise State, which had been riding a three-game winning streak.
Fresno State will host Wyoming on Nov. 15, while Boise State travels to face San Diego State on the same date.
