Fresno State stuns Boise State in dominant road victory

BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Fresno State Bulldogs delivered a dominant defensive performance to rout the Boise State Broncos 30-7 on Saturday afternoon at Albertsons Stadium.

Entering the game as a heavy underdog, Fresno State’s defense was the story, completely stifling a Boise State offense that was projected by Interstat’s ELO system to have a 94.6 percent probability of winning. The Bulldogs forced three turnovers and recorded four sacks, holding the Broncos to a single, late-second-quarter touchdown.

The victory pushes both teams to identical 6-3 records on the season, creating a logjam in the Mountain West Conference standings.

From the outset, the game was a defensive struggle, defined by punts and offensive miscues. The first points of the game did not come until late in the opening quarter. A methodical 11-play, 55-yard drive by Fresno State, powered by running backs Bryson Donelson and Rayshon Luke, culminated in a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Elijah Gilliam. Dylan Lynch’s extra point gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 2:28 remaining in the first.

Boise State’s offense, which cycled through quarterbacks Maddux Madsen and Max Cutforth in the early going, found no rhythm. The Broncos’ best first-half opportunity came early in the second quarter, but a 45-yard field goal attempt by Colton Boomer was blocked by Fresno State’s Jahzon Jacks.

The Bulldogs extended their lead just before halftime. After Boise State finally broke through with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Cutforth to Chase Penry with 2:07 left in the half to make the score 10-7, Fresno State quarterback Carson Conklin engineered a quick drive to set up a 36-yard field goal by Lynch as time expired, sending the Bulldogs into the locker room with a 10-7 advantage.

Any hope of a Boise State comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. The Bulldogs’ defense continued its relentless pressure, and the running game took over. On Fresno State’s first possession of the second half, Brandon Ramirez finished a drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing Boise State possession, Cutforth’s pass was intercepted by Fresno State linebacker Tytus Khajavi, who returned it to the Boise State 47-yard line. The Bulldogs capitalized swiftly, with Donelson scoring on a 2-yard run to push the lead to 24-7.

The Fresno State ground attack was the engine of the offense, with Conklin attempting only 21 passes for 35 yards. Luke led the charge with 88 yards on 16 carries, while Donelson added 45 yards and a touchdown on 11 attempts. Ramirez contributed 34 yards and a score on seven carries.

Conversely, the Boise State offense was plagued by inefficiency and turnovers. Cutforth finished 14 of 29 for 106 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked three times for a loss of 31 yards. Simeon Harris and Khajavi each recorded an interception for the Bulldogs.

Malik Sherrod provided a rare bright spot for the Broncos, rushing for 67 yards on 10 carries, including a 44-yard burst in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs sealed the game with two more Lynch field goals in the fourth quarter, from 43 and 33 yards, for the final margin of 30-7.

Defensively, Fresno State was led by safety Jadon Pearson, who recorded 10 tackles. For Boise State, safety Ty Benefield had a game-high 11 tackles, and defensive end Jayden Virgin-Morgan added eight tackles.

The loss is a significant setback for a Boise State team that had been rolling through its conference schedule, while the win provides a massive momentum boost for Fresno State as both teams enter the final stretch of the regular season. The Bulldogs will host Wyoming on Nov. 15, while the Broncos travel to face San Diego State on the same date.
