Indiana at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Indiana Hoosiers delivered a stunning and decisive statement on Saturday, dismantling the Maryland Terrapins 55 to 10 in a road rout that defied pregame expectations and kept their perfect season intact.
Entering the contest as a 21.5-point underdog according to oddsmakers, the Hoosiers flipped the script entirely, improving to 9-0 overall with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball at SECU Stadium. The Terrapins fell to 4-4.
The game’s tone was set early. After an opening-drive interception by Maryland’s Jamare Glasker, the Terrapins’ offense stalled and had to settle for a 24-yard Sean O’Haire field goal for an early 3-0 lead. It would be the only time Maryland was in front.
Indiana answered emphatically, embarking on a 13-play, 93-yard drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from quarterback Fernando Mendoza. The Hoosiers never looked back, adding two Nick Radicic field goals and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Mendoza to Omar Cooper Jr. to take a commanding 20-3 lead into halftime.
The second half was a continuation of Indiana’s onslaught. Running back Kaelon Black broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 27-3.
Maryland briefly showed a pulse when quarterback Malik Washington connected with DeJuan Williams on a 55-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 27-10. The momentum was short-lived, however. On the ensuing possession, a fumble by Maryland’s Octavian Smith Jr. was recovered by Indiana’s Byron Baldwin Jr., setting up a 16-yard touchdown run by Roman Hemby just three plays later.
The Hoosiers poured it on in the fourth quarter. Backup quarterback Alberto Mendoza, relieving his brother Fernando, threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Brady and later broke off a spectacular 53-yard touchdown run. Kaelon Martin added a 1-yard rushing score to complete the scoring.
Statistically, the Hoosiers were efficient and explosive. Starting quarterback Fernando Mendoza, a Miami native, completed 14 of 21 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown through the air, while adding 24 yards and another score on the ground. His brother, Alberto Mendoza, was perfect in relief, completing both his pass attempts for 20 yards and a touchdown, and his 53-yard scamper was the team’s longest play from scrimmage.
The Indiana ground game was relentless, with Black and Hemby combining for multiple scores and consistent gains.
For Maryland, the day was a struggle. Quarterback Malik Washington of Glen Burnie, Maryland, finished 16 of 31 for 242 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His primary target was DeJuan Williams, who caught four passes for 78 yards and the team’s sole touchdown. Defensively, Messiah Delhomme recorded a game-high 12 tackles for the Terrapins.
The lopsided victory, which saw the total points go under the over/under line of 50.5, solidifies Indiana’s status as a national surprise. They will look to continue their unbeaten campaign next Saturday at Penn State. Maryland, seeking to get back to .500, will travel to face Rutgers.
