Indiana rolls past Maryland to stay unbeaten
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, the Indiana Hoosiers delivered a commanding performance on Saturday, November 1, 2025, dismantling the Maryland Terrapins 55 to 10 in a Big Ten Conference matchup at SECU Stadium.
The victory preserved Indiana’s perfect season, elevating its record to 9-0, while Maryland fell to an even 4-4. The lopsided result defied the pregame narrative, as Maryland had been installed as a 21.5-point favorite, and the combined score of 65 points sailed over the betting over/under line of 50.5.
The game began with a flicker of hope for the home team. On the first play from scrimmage, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound sophomore from Miami, Florida, had his pass intercepted by Maryland defensive back Jamare Glasker, who returned it to the Indiana 12-yard line. The Terrapins’ offense, however, stalled, and they settled for a 24-yard field goal from Sean O’Haire to take an early 3-0 lead.
That early advantage would be Maryland’s only lead of the afternoon. Indiana responded with a methodical, 13-play, 91-yard drive that consumed over six minutes of the clock. The drive was capped by Mendoza plunging into the end zone on a 7-yard run, giving the Hoosiers a 7-3 lead with 2:11 remaining in the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw Indiana begin to pull away. After a Maryland turnover on an interception, the Hoosiers drove deep into Terrapins territory but had to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Nicolas Radicic. Later in the quarter, Mendoza connected with receiver Omar Cooper Jr. on a 22-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 17-3. Just before halftime, Radicic added another field goal, this time from 46 yards, sending Indiana into the break with a 20-3 advantage.
Any thought of a Maryland comeback was extinguished in a dominant third quarter by the Hoosiers, who scored 21 points to put the game out of reach. The onslaught began immediately, with Indiana running back Kaelon Black breaking free for a 31-yard touchdown run.
The Terrapins showed a brief sign of life on their ensuing possession. Maryland quarterback Malik Washington, a 6-foot-5, 231-pound junior from Glen Burnie, Maryland, found running back DeJuan Williams on a short pass that turned into a 55-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 27-10.
The respite was short-lived. On the very next Maryland drive, a fumble by receiver Octavian Smith Jr. was recovered by Indiana’s Byron Baldwin Jr., setting up the Hoosiers with excellent field position. Running back Roman Hemby capitalized with a 16-yard touchdown run, his second of the day, pushing the lead to 34-10.
Indiana continued its offensive showcase in the fourth quarter, substituting in backup quarterback Alberto Mendoza, Fernando’s brother. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound redshirt freshman from Miami, Florida, promptly engineered a scoring drive, finishing it with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Brady.
Alberto Mendoza then provided one of the game’s most electrifying moments, scrambling for a 53-yard gain to set up his own 1-yard touchdown run, concluding the scoring at 55-10.
Statistically, the Hoosiers’ offense was efficient and balanced. Fernando Mendoza finished 14 of 21 for 201 yards with one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown, while also adding 24 yards on the ground. Alberto Mendoza was a perfect 2 for 2 passing for 20 yards and a touchdown, and his 53-yard run was the team’s longest from scrimmage. The ground game was led by Black, who rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown, and Hemby, who added 67 yards and two scores.
For Maryland, Washington completed 16 of 31 passes for 242 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Williams was a bright spot, catching four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Terrapins were led by Messiah Delhomme, who recorded 12 tackles, and Dillan Fontus, who added seven.
The victory sets up a major Big Ten East clash next Saturday, November 8, as the undefeated Hoosiers travel to face Penn State. Maryland will look to rebound on the road against Rutgers.
