Mississippi State at Arkansas
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a stunning upset that defied pregame projections, the Mississippi State Bulldogs mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks 38-35 on Saturday at Razorback Stadium.
The Bulldogs, who entered the game as 5.5-point underdogs, scored 17 points in the final quarter to erase a seven-point deficit and escape with a crucial Southeastern Conference road victory. The win improves Mississippi State to 5-4 on the season, while Arkansas falls to 2-7.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Arkansas controlling much of the action until the final period. Mississippi State struck first, capping an opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Shapen to running back Davon Booth. The Bulldogs led 7-0 after a quarter that was largely dominated by the Razorbacks’ ground game.
Arkansas responded with a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-0. The Razorbacks got on the board with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Taylen Green to Rohan Jones. Kicker Scott Starzyk added two field goals, one as time expired in the half, to send Arkansas into the locker room with a 13-7 lead.
The third quarter became a wild shootout, with the teams combining for 29 points. Mississippi State reclaimed the lead just over a minute into the half on a 45-yard touchdown strike from backup quarterback Kamario Taylor to Anthony Evans III. Arkansas answered with a methodical 75-yard drive, finished by an 8-yard Green rushing touchdown.
The Razorbacks then extended their lead after a Mississippi State turnover on downs. On the first play of the ensuing drive, receiver Raylen Sharpe took an end-around 41 yards to the Bulldogs’ 20-yard line. Mike Washington Jr. finished the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run, and a successful two-point conversion pass from Green to Jones gave Arkansas a 28-14 advantage.
Undeterred, the Bulldogs struck back quickly. Taylor, providing a dynamic spark, ripped off a 20-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 28-21. Arkansas, however, seemed to regain control early in the fourth quarter. A 2-yard touchdown plunge by Braylen Russell capped a 75-yard drive and put the Razorbacks up 35-21 with 13:43 remaining.
Mississippi State’s comeback began with a 2-yard Booth touchdown run, set up by a 33-yard Shapen pass to Evans. After forcing an Arkansas punt, the Bulldogs drove into field goal range, where kicker Kyle Ferrie connected from 46 yards to tie the game at 35 with 5:07 left.
The Bulldogs’ defense came up with a critical stop, forcing another punt and giving the offense the ball at their own 31-yard line with three minutes remaining. Shapen engineered a masterful game-winning drive, completing a key 32-yard pass to Brenen Thompson to move into Arkansas territory. Facing fourth down, Shapen found Evans for an 18-yard touchdown with 48 seconds left for the winning score.
Arkansas had one final chance, but its last-ditch drive ended with a sack and an intentional grounding penalty, sealing the victory for Mississippi State.
Shapen finished the game 16 of 28 for 242 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 16 yards. Evans was his primary target, hauling in five passes for 111 yards and two scores. Thompson added six receptions for 107 yards. The Bulldogs’ two-quarterback system paid dividends as Taylor rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.
For Arkansas, Green was 19 of 31 for 194 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while also leading the team with 46 rushing yards. Washington was a workhorse, rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Sharpe was a versatile weapon, catching five passes for 84 yards and rushing for 41 yards on a single carry.
Defensively, Isaac Smith led all tacklers with 11 for Mississippi State. Arkansas was led by linebacker Bradley Shaw with eight tackles, while defensive back Jordan Young recorded a key interception.
The Bulldogs will look to build on the momentum next Saturday when they host Georgia. Arkansas travels to face LSU on Nov. 15.
