Mississippi State Edges Arkansas in High-Scoring Shootout
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Mississippi State Bulldogs erased a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks 38-35 on a last-minute touchdown Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Razorback Stadium.
The victory, sealed by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Blake Shapen to Anthony Evans III with 48 seconds remaining, defied pregame projections that heavily favored the home team and snapped a two-game losing skid for the Bulldogs.
Mississippi State improved to 5-4 on the season, moving one win away from bowl eligibility, while Arkansas’s difficult season continued, dropping the Razorbacks to 2-7.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Arkansas dominating the second quarter and much of the third before Mississippi State’s offense exploded for 31 points after halftime.
The Bulldogs struck first, capping an efficient opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Shapen to Davon Booth. The Razorbacks’ offense, however, found its rhythm in the second quarter. Quarterback Taylen Green engineered a methodical drive, finishing it with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Rohan Jones. After forcing a Mississippi State punt, Arkansas marched down the field again, with Scott Starzyk connecting on a 42-yard field goal to tie the game at 10.
The two teams traded possessions before the Razorbacks mounted a two-minute drill just before halftime. Green connected with Raylen Sharpe on a 38-yard completion to the Mississippi State 12-yard line, setting up a 30-yard Starzyk field goal as time expired to give Arkansas a 13-7 lead at the break.
The third quarter became a wild shootout. Mississippi State’s offense, now operating with quarterback Kamario Taylor in a change-of-pace role, needed just four plays to retake the lead. Taylor launched a 45-yard touchdown bomb to Evans on the drive, putting the Bulldogs up 14-13.
Arkansas responded immediately. A heavy dose of running back Mike Washington Jr., who finished with 116 rushing yards, set up Green for an 8-yard touchdown run. The Razorbacks then successfully executed a trick play for a two-point conversion, with Jones catching a pass to extend their lead to 21-14.
The Bulldogs’ special teams unit then gave up a massive play, as Sharpe took a reverse 41 yards on the ensuing kickoff return to the Mississippi State 20. Washington punched it in on the next play, and with another successful two-point conversion, Arkansas had suddenly built a commanding 28-14 advantage.
Undaunted, Mississippi State answered right back. Taylor, showcasing his dual-threat ability, ripped off a 20-yard touchdown run to cap a quick response drive, pulling the Bulldogs back within a score at 28-21.
Arkansas seemed to deliver a knockout blow early in the fourth quarter. A powerful goal-line drive was finished by Braylen Russell’s 2-yard touchdown plunge, pushing the Razorback lead back to 14 points at 35-21 with 13:43 left in the game.
From that point, the game belonged entirely to the Bulldogs and quarterback Blake Shapen. He led a critical 75-yard drive, which ended with Booth’s second rushing touchdown of the afternoon from 2 yards out, making the score 35-28.
After a defensive stop, Shapen went back to work. He engineered a drive that stalled deep in Arkansas territory, but Kyle Ferrie drilled a 46-yard field goal to pull Mississippi State within four points at 35-31 with 5:07 on the clock.
The Bulldogs’ defense forced another quick punt, giving Shapen the ball back at his own 31-yard line with 3:00 remaining and a chance to win the game. Facing a must-score situation, Shapen was methodical. He connected with Brenen Thompson for a 32-yard gain on a crucial third down to keep the drive alive. With the clock ticking under a minute, Shapen found Evans on a slant route for the game-winning 18-yard score.
Arkansas had one final chance, but its last-ditch drive ended with Green being sacked by Nic Mitchell and throwing an intentional grounding penalty as time expired.
Shapen finished the game 16 of 28 for 242 yards and two touchdowns, with Evans being his primary target, hauling in five catches for 111 yards and two scores. Thompson added six receptions for 107 yards. The two-quarterback system with Taylor proved highly effective, as the backup threw for 40 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 55 yards and another score.
For Arkansas, Green was 19 of 31 for 194 yards with one passing and one rushing touchdown. Washington’s 116 yards on the ground led all rushers, while Sharpe was the top receiver with five catches for 84 yards.
Defensively, Isaac Smith led all tacklers with 11 for Mississippi State. Arkansas was led by linebacker Bradley Shaw with eight tackles, while defensive back Jordan Young had a key interception in the third quarter.
Mississippi State looks to build on the momentum next Saturday when they host the Georgia Bulldogs. Arkansas has a bye week before traveling to face LSU on Nov. 15.
