Morehead State at Valparaiso
VALPARAISO, Ind. (Interstat) — In a game that defied offensive expectations, the Morehead State Eagles relied on a stingy defense and a powerful rushing attack to secure a 17-13 victory over the Valparaiso Beacons on Saturday at Brown Field.
The contest, projected to be a high-scoring affair by Interstat, instead became a defensive struggle. The Eagles improved their season record to 2-5, while the Beacons fell to 1-5.
Morehead State set the tone early, answering Valparaiso’s opening touchdown with one of their own to forge a 7-7 tie after the first quarter. The Eagles then took a lead they would not relinquish just before halftime. A late-second-quarter drive, keyed by the connection between quarterback Carter Cravens and receiver Ryan Upp, set up a 41-yard field goal by Thomas Schwartz V as time expired, giving Morehead State a 10-7 advantage at the break.
The Eagles extended their lead on their first possession of the second half. Running back Isaac Stopke broke loose for a 42-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and three plays later, Craig Cunningham punched in a 4-yard touchdown run to put Morehead State ahead 17-7.
Valparaiso responded with a determined drive, but the Eagles’ defense held firm in the red zone. The Beacons had to settle for a 23-yard field goal attempt from Luke Scoma, which sailed wide left, preserving Morehead State’s 17-7 lead late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter became a defensive standoff. Valparaiso’s offense, which saw time from quarterbacks Rowan Keefe, Nathan Downey, and Marcus Brown, struggled to sustain drives against a relentless Eagles defense. The Beacons’ final hope ended when Downey’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the final minute, sealing the win for Morehead State.
Eagles quarterback Carter Cravens of Cypress, Texas, managed the game effectively, completing 16 of 25 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown while adding 37 yards on the ground. His primary target was Ryan Upp, who hauled in seven catches for 78 yards. The offensive star for Morehead State was running back Isaac Stopke, who gashed the Valparaiso defense for 118 yards on 17 carries.
For Valparaiso, Rowan Keefe of Park Ridge, Illinois, completed 9 of 15 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown but also threw a critical first-quarter interception to Morehead State’s Jackson Benjamin. Chris Gundy was a bright spot for the Beacons’ offense, catching five passes for 108 yards. Dawaiian McNeely led the ground game with 44 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles’ victory, while low-scoring, provides a positive note as they prepare to host Davidson next Saturday. Valparaiso will look to regroup on the road at Presbyterian.
