Bryant at Rhode Island
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (Interstat) — Quarterback Devin Farrell threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns and the Rhode Island defense forced three turnovers, including a game-sealing pick-six, to power the Rams to a 38-17 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday at Meade Stadium.
The win improved Rhode Island’s record to 5-2 across all competitions, while Bryant fell to 2-5.
Rhode Island’s offense found its rhythm after a shaky start. The Rams’ first drive ended when Bryant defensive back Olatunde Mkparu forced a fumble from receiver Marquis Buchanan, which was recovered by the Bulldogs’ Ezra Carter at the Bryant 21-yard line. Bryant capitalized on the turnover, marching 79 yards on a methodical 14-play drive that culminated in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Keefner to tight end Koby Keenan.
The Rams responded emphatically. A 51-yard touchdown run by Gabe Winowich late in the first quarter cut the deficit to 7. After recovering the ensuing kickoff, Rhode Island needed just three plays to take the lead, with Winowich scoring again on a 6-yard run to put the Rams up 14-7.
Bryant answered with 10 points in the second quarter. A 24-yard field goal by Nicholas Stoyanovich was followed by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Elijah Elliott, giving the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead.
The back-and-forth half continued as Rhode Island reclaimed the lead just before halftime. Farrell engineered a 10-play, 85-yard drive, finishing it with a 27-yard touchdown strike to tight end Kevin Schaeffer. After forcing a quick Bryant punt, the Rams drove into field goal range, and Garth White connected on a 54-yard kick as time expired to send Rhode Island into the locker room with a 24-17 advantage.
The Rams extended their lead on their first possession of the second half. Farrell connected with Greg Gaines III on a 38-yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 31-17.
Bryant’s offense, which moved the ball effectively at times, was stymied by turnovers and failed to score in the second half. The Bulldogs drove deep into Rhode Island territory early in the fourth quarter, but a fourth-down pass from Keefner fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.
The Rams put the game completely out of reach with 2:12 remaining when defensive back Ayinde Johnson intercepted Keefner and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown.
Keefner finished 17 of 36 for 196 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions for Bryant. He also led the Bulldogs in rushing with 67 yards on 15 carries. Elliott was a workhorse for the Bulldogs, rushing for 83 yards and a touchdown while adding 84 receiving yards on five catches.
For Rhode Island, Winowich rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Buchanan was the leading receiver with 124 yards on three catches, including a 63-yard reception that set up a scoring opportunity. Gaines added 92 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.
The victory keeps Rhode Island in contention near the top of the conference standings as it prepares for a road game at Elon on Nov. 8. Bryant will look to rebound when it hosts Monmouth on Nov. 1.
