Rhode Island rolls past Bryant for third straight win

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive plays and a dominant second half, the Rhode Island Rams defeated the Bryant Bulldogs 38-17 on Saturday at Meade Stadium.

The Rams, improving to 5-2 overall, used a balanced offensive attack and a game-sealing defensive touchdown to pull away from the Bulldogs after a competitive first half. Bryant, which led briefly in the first quarter, fell to 2-5 on the season.

Rhode Island quarterback Devin Farrell, a Stockbridge, Georgia native, orchestrated the victory, completing 14 of 22 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns while adding 19 yards on six carries. His favorite target was big-play receiver Marquis Buchanan from Providence, Rhode Island, who hauled in three catches for 124 yards, including a 63-yard reception that set up a score.

Bryant struck first, capitalizing on a methodical opening drive. The Bulldogs marched 75 yards in 14 plays, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jaden Keefner to tight end Koby Keenan. The drive, which consumed over six minutes of game clock, gave Bryant a 7-0 lead.

The Rams responded swiftly, tying the game on a 51-yard touchdown run by running back Gabe Winowich late in the first quarter. The momentum shifted decisively in Rhode Island’s favor on the ensuing kickoff, which was muffed by Bryant and recovered by the Rams’ Andre DePina-Gray. Two plays later, Winowich powered in from six yards out for his second touchdown, giving Rhode Island a 14-7 lead it would not relinquish.

Bryant closed the gap early in the second quarter with a 24-yard field goal from Nicholas Stoyanovich, making it 14-10. The Bulldogs then appeared to seize control when defensive back Olatunde Mkparu intercepted a Farrell pass in the end zone for a touchback. Bryant proceeded to engineer a 15-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard Elijah Elliott touchdown run, to retake the lead at 17-14.

Rhode Island answered before halftime. Farrell led the Rams on a 75-yard scoring drive, connecting with tight end Kevin Schaeffer on a 27-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead at 21-17. After forcing a quick Bryant punt, Farrell drove the Rams into field goal range, and Garth White nailed a 54-yard kick as time expired in the half to extend the lead to 24-17.

The second half belonged entirely to the Rams. Their defense stiffened, repeatedly forcing Bryant into punts and failed fourth-down conversions. Rhode Island extended its lead to 31-17 in the third quarter when Farrell found receiver Greg Gaines III on a 38-yard touchdown strike.

Bryant’s offense, which moved the ball effectively in the first half, was stymied after the break. Quarterback Jaden Keefner, who finished 17 of 36 for 196 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions while rushing for 67 yards, was under constant pressure. The Bulldogs’ final hopes were extinguished with just over two minutes remaining when Keefner’s pass was intercepted by Rhode Island defensive back Ayinde Johnson and returned 24 yards for a touchdown, sealing the 38-17 final.

Elijah Elliott was a bright spot for Bryant, compiling 167 all-purpose yards with 83 rushing and 84 receiving, including a touchdown.

The victory keeps Rhode Island in contention in the conference race, while Bryant searches for answers after its fifth loss in seven games. The Rams’ next contest is on the road against Elon on Nov. 8. Bryant returns home to face Monmouth on Nov. 1.
