South Florida at Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a dramatic finish at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Saturday, the Memphis Tigers remained undefeated, staging a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the South Florida Bulls 34 to 31.
A crowd of 30,940 watched as the Tigers, trailing by 14 points entering the final period, scored 17 unanswered points to snatch the victory and improve their record to 6-0. The Bulls fell to 5-1 with the heartbreaking loss.
South Florida dominated the early stages, racing out to a 24-7 lead in the first half. Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown was the catalyst, accounting for two first-quarter touchdowns. He capped the opening drive with a 3-yard scoring run and later broke free for a spectacular 44-yard touchdown dash. Brown finished the game with 269 yards passing and a touchdown through the air, while also leading his team in rushing with 121 yards on the ground.
Memphis struggled to find its footing offensively for three quarters but exploded when it mattered most. Trailing 31-17, the Tigers began their comeback with a 13-yard touchdown run by Greg Desrosiers Jr. early in the fourth, though a failed two-point conversion kept the Bulls’ lead at eight.
After a Memphis field goal cut the deficit to 31-26, the Tigers’ defense forced a punt, setting the stage for the game-winning drive. Quarterback Brendon Lewis engineered a masterful series, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Cortez Braham Jr. with just 1:07 remaining. Lewis then powered his way into the end zone on the two-point conversion to give Memphis its first lead of the game.
Lewis was instrumental in the victory, completing 27 of 44 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns, both to Braham Jr., who finished with 7 receptions for 75 yards. Lewis also added 35 rushing yards. Jamari Hawkins provided a deep threat for the Tigers, hauling in 3 passes for 85 yards.
South Florida had one final chance to tie or win the game. Brown efficiently moved the Bulls down the field, connecting frequently with receiver Keshaun Singleton, who had 7 catches for 88 yards. The drive stalled at the Memphis 24-yard line, setting up a 52-yard field goal attempt for Nico Gramatica as time expired. The kick sailed wide left, sealing the Memphis victory.
The Bulls’ offense featured several big plays, including a 73-yard touchdown run by Sam Franklin in the third quarter and a 60-yard scamper from Nykahi Davenport.
Defensively, the game was led by the linebackers. Memphis’ Sam Brumfield recorded a game-high 13 tackles, including a sack, while South Florida’s Mac Harris matched him with 13 tackles of his own.
The Tigers now look to protect their perfect record on the road at Rice next Friday. South Florida will aim to rebound when they host Texas-San Antonio on Thursday, Nov. 6.
