Memphis Rallies Past South Florida to Remain Undefeated
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a wild American Athletic Conference shootout that saw four lead changes in the final quarter, the Memphis Tigers remained undefeated, staging a furious fourth-quarter comeback to stun the South Florida Bulls 34-31 on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
A crowd of 30,940 watched as the Tigers, trailing by 14 points entering the final period, erupted for 17 unanswered points to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and improve to 6-0 on the season. The Bulls, who had controlled much of the game, fell to 5-1.
The game was a tale of two halves, and ultimately, a tale of the final quarter. South Florida’s dynamic quarterback, Byrum Brown, was spectacular for three periods, amassing 390 total yards and three touchdowns. His 44-yard rushing score in the first quarter and his orchestration of a prolific offense gave the Bulls a seemingly comfortable 31-17 lead after three quarters.
But the final frame belonged to Memphis quarterback Brendon Lewis. The Tigers’ signal-caller, who finished with 356 total yards, engineered three consecutive scoring drives in the fourth quarter to complete the stunning reversal. He capped the comeback with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Cortez Braham Jr. with 1:07 remaining and then powered in the decisive two-point conversion himself to give Memphis its first lead since the opening minutes.
The game began at a breakneck pace. South Florida’s opening drive ended in an interception by Memphis linebacker Everett Roussaw Jr., and the Tigers capitalized immediately. Frank Peasant broke free for a 19-yard touchdown run just over two minutes into the game, giving Memphis an early 7-0 advantage.
The Bulls responded emphatically. Brown led a methodical 75-yard drive, capping it with a 3-yard touchdown run to tie the game. After forcing a Memphis punt, Brown struck again, this time with his legs, scrambling for a breathtaking 44-yard touchdown to put South Florida up 14-7.
The second quarter saw both teams trade blows. Brown connected with Jeremiah Koger on a 5-yard touchdown pass to extend the Bulls’ lead. Memphis answered just before halftime, with Lewis finding Braham for a 5-yard score to cut the deficit to 24-14. South Florida, however, managed to add a 46-yard field goal from Nico Gramatica as time expired in the half to take a 27-14 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter featured a defensive standoff for the most part. Memphis managed a 55-yard field goal from Gianni Spetic, but South Florida appeared to deliver a knockout punch as the quarter ended. On the first play after a missed Memphis field goal, Sam Franklin took a handoff and exploded through the line for a 73-yard touchdown run, sending the Bulls into the fourth quarter with a commanding 31-17 lead.
The momentum shifted irrevocably in the fourth. Lewis led the Tigers on a 75-yard drive, finished by a 13-yard touchdown run from Greg Desrosiers Jr. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 31-23. After a South Florida punt, Lewis went back to work, driving the Tigers deep into Bulls territory before the drive stalled, resulting in a 28-yard Spetic field goal to pull Memphis within five points at 31-26.
With the game on the line, the Tigers’ defense forced another critical punt, giving Lewis the ball back with just over four minutes to play. He methodically dissected the South Florida defense, mixing runs and short passes before hitting Braham for the game-tying 10-yard touchdown. Lewis then barreled into the end zone on the two-point try to put Memphis ahead for good.
South Florida had one last chance, driving to the Memphis 24-yard line in the final seconds, but Gramatica’s potential game-tying 52-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide left.
Brown finished with 269 yards passing and a touchdown through the air while adding 121 yards and a score on the ground. Franklin was a key weapon, rushing for 81 yards and the long touchdown. For Memphis, Lewis spread the ball around, with Braham hauling in seven passes for 75 yards and two critical touchdowns. Jamari Hawkins added 85 receiving yards on three catches.
Defensively, the game was led by the linebackers. Memphis’s Sam Brumfield recorded a game-high 13 tackles, including a sack, while South Florida’s Mac Harris matched him with 13 tackles of his own.
The victory keeps Memphis atop the AAC standings and hands South Florida its first loss of the season in a heartbreaking fashion. The Tigers will look to continue their perfect season next Friday at Rice, while the Bulls will regroup before hosting Texas-San Antonio on Thursday, Nov. 6.
