Rhode Island at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Rhode Island Rams delivered a commanding 58-17 victory over the Albany Great Danes on Saturday at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, a result that defied a pregame projection that heavily favored the home team.
The Rams, improving to 5-2 overall, unleashed a near-flawless offensive performance, particularly in the first half, to build an insurmountable lead and hand Albany its fifth loss in six games this season.
The tone was set early by Rhode Island quarterback Devin Farrell. The junior from Stockbridge, Georgia, was surgical in his execution, completing 19 of 20 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns. His primary target was Greg Gaines III, who hauled in six catches for 153 yards and two scores, including a 42-yard strike in the second quarter.
Rhode Island’s offense was methodical and relentless. After an opening drive stalled and resulted in a 48-yard field goal from Garth White, the Rams engineered a 13-play, 76-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Antwain Littleton Jr. The Rams led 10-0 after the first quarter and then exploded for 21 points in the second.
Farrell connected with Gaines for a 32-yard touchdown and later found tight end Connor Finer for a 4-yard score just before halftime. The Rams’ defense also contributed significantly to the first-half dominance, intercepting Albany quarterback Jack Shields twice. Ayinde Johnson and Moses Meus each came down with first-half picks, stifling any momentum the Great Danes tried to generate.
Albany’s only points before the break came from a 33-yard James Bozek field goal in the second quarter, sending the teams to the locker room with Rhode Island leading 31-3.
Any thought of a second-half comeback for Albany was quickly extinguished. Rhode Island took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and marched down the field, with Farrell hitting Finer for another 5-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 38-3.
Albany finally found the end zone late in the third quarter. Shields, who finished 12 of 26 for 192 yards with two interceptions, connected with Griffin Woodell on a 46-yard touchdown pass. Woodell was a bright spot for the Great Danes, rushing for 62 yards on five carries and adding 50 receiving yards. Shortly after, backup quarterback Aidan Semo punched in a 2-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 38-17.
But Rhode Island’s ground game, which had been effective all afternoon, put the game completely out of reach in the fourth quarter. Terrence Campbell powered in for a 2-yard touchdown, and later, third-string quarterback Conner Kenyon found tight end Will Dixon for a 2-yard scoring pass to push the lead to 52-17. A final defensive touchdown on a 47-yard fumble return by Leisaan Hibbert with 51 seconds left provided the final margin.
The Rams’ rushing attack was balanced and potent. Littleton Jr. rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Campbell added 39 yards and a score. Gabe Winowich contributed 37 rushing yards and caught three passes for 58 yards.
For Albany, the loss extends a difficult season. Shields was under constant pressure, being sacked multiple times, including three by Rhode Island’s A. J. Pena.
The result was a stark contrast to the pregame analysis from Interstat, whose game simulator had projected an Albany victory by a score of 38-23. Their ELO system, however, had given Rhode Island a 70.9 percent probability to win, a forecast the Rams emphatically fulfilled.
Rhode Island looks to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it hosts Bryant. Albany will try to regroup on the road next Saturday against Villanova.
