Rhode Island Rams Rout Albany in Lopsided Road Victory
ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame projections, the Rhode Island Rams delivered an offensive masterclass, dismantling the Albany Great Danes 58 to 17 in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Saturday at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
The final score stood in stark contrast to the forecast, as Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 38 to 23 victory for Albany. Instead, the Rams improved to 5-2 overall, while the Great Danes fell to a dismal 1-5.
The story of the afternoon was the near-flawless performance of Rhode Island quarterback Devin Farrell. The junior from Stockbridge, Georgia, was surgical, completing 19 of 20 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns, orchestrating an offense that scored on its first seven possessions and punted only twice.
Rhode Island set the tone immediately, marching downfield on its opening drive. While the drive stalled inside the red zone, kicker Garth White connected from 48 yards out to put the Rams on the board first. The Rhode Island defense then forced a quick three-and-out, and a 36-yard punt return by Angel Sanchez set up the offense with prime field position.
The Rams capitalized six plays later, with powerhouse running back Antwain Littleton Jr. bulldozing his way in from one yard out to cap a methodical drive and give Rhode Island a 10 to 0 lead late in the first quarter.
The second quarter was a showcase of the Farrell-to-Greg Gaines III connection. After Albany got on the board with a 33-yard James Bozek field goal, Farrell found Gaines for a 32-yard touchdown strike. On the Rams’ next possession, the duo connected again, this time for a 42-yard score, extending the lead to 24 to 3.
The Rhode Island defense, which harassed Albany quarterbacks all day, came up with a crucial turnover late in the half. With the Great Danes driving in Rams territory, linebacker Moses Meus intercepted a Jack Shields pass. Farrell promptly led the offense 69 yards in just over two minutes, finishing the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Connor Finer, sending the Rams into halftime with a commanding 31 to 3 advantage.
Any hopes of an Albany comeback were quickly extinguished in the third quarter. Rhode Island received the second-half kickoff and embarked on another marathon drive, consuming over six minutes of clock and culminating in Farrell’s fourth touchdown pass, a 5-yarder to Finer.
Albany finally found the end zone midway through the third quarter. Shields, under constant pressure, hit running back Griffin Woodell on a screen pass that turned into a 46-yard touchdown. The Great Danes then capitalized on a short field after a Rhode Island punt, with backup quarterback Aidan Semo of Cornwall, New York, plunging in from two yards out to cut the deficit to 38 to 17.
That was as close as the home team would get. The Rams responded with a relentless ground attack in the fourth quarter. Terrence Campbell finished a 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Later, with reserves in the game, third-string quarterback Conner Kenyon of Austin, Texas, found tight end Will Dixon for a 2-yard score. A final defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery capped the historic rout for the Rams.
Beyond Farrell’s brilliance, the Rams’ offense was balanced and potent. Littleton Jr. rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, while Campbell added 39 yards and a score. Gaines was the primary receiving threat, hauling in six passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. The Rhode Island defense recorded multiple sacks and two critical interceptions, one by Meus and one by Ayinde Johnson.
For Albany, Shields struggled, completing 12 of 26 passes for 192 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions before being relieved by Semo. Woodell provided a bright spot, rushing for 62 yards and adding 50 receiving yards with a touchdown.
The Rams look to continue their winning ways next Saturday when they host Bryant. Albany will try to regroup on the road against Villanova.
