Panthers Dominate Jaguars in Surprising Blowout

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, the Prairie View A&M Panthers delivered a commanding defensive performance to throttle the Southern Jaguars 24-3 on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

Heavily favored Southern, playing in its home city, was held to a single field goal as the visiting Panthers improved to 4-2 on the season. The Jaguars fell to 1-5.

The final score stood in stark contrast to the projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a Southern victory with a score of 42-39. The Jaguars were installed as six-point favorites and given a 52.9 percent probability to win by the same service’s ELO system. The combined 27 total points fell far short of the over/under line of 46.5.

The game was a defensive struggle through a scoreless first quarter, but Prairie View A&M seized control with a 17-point explosion in the second period and never looked back, adding a final touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Panthers quarterback Cameron Peters, a 6-foot-4, 207-pound junior from Missouri City, Texas, orchestrated the efficient offensive attack. He completed 19 of 31 passes for 224 yards and connected with Jyzaiah Rockwell for a 13-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter. Peters also added 17 yards on the ground.

The Prairie View ground game was a two-headed monster, with Chase Bingmon and Lamagea McDowell sharing the workload. Bingmon, a 5-9 running back from Terrell, Texas, rushed for 64 yards on 13 carries and was a dynamic receiving threat, catching two passes for 52 yards. McDowell, a 6-2, 230-pound powerhouse from Gastonia, North Carolina, pounded in two touchdowns on the ground, including a 15-yard run in the second quarter and a 1-yard plunge in the fourth. He finished with 56 rushing yards.

Rockwell, the recipient of Peters’ touchdown pass, was a key target, hauling in four catches for 34 yards. Andre Dennis caught three passes for 44 yards, and Rodny Ojo added four receptions for 43 yards.

For Southern, the offense never found its rhythm. Quarterback Ashton Strother, a 6-3 sophomore from Memphis, Tennessee, was held to 81 yards through the air on 12-of-21 passing and was intercepted once in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars’ lone score came from kicker Nathan Zimmer, a Central, Louisiana native, who connected on a 36-yard field goal in the third quarter to avoid the shutout.

The bright spot for the Jaguars’ offense was the running of Trey Holly. The 5-7 back from Farmerville, Louisiana, battled for 99 yards on 21 carries, consistently moving the chains but unable to break through for a score against a stout Panthers defense.

The game’s momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. After a first quarter dominated by punts and stalled drives, the Panthers’ offense ignited. McDowell’s 15-yard touchdown run capped a drive early in the period to open the scoring.

Later in the quarter, Peters engineered a methodical drive, culminating in the 13-yard touchdown pass to Rockwell to extend the lead. The Panthers added a field goal before halftime to take a commanding 17-0 lead into the break.

Southern’s best drive of the game consumed much of the third quarter, marching deep into Prairie View territory, but the drive stalled, forcing them to settle for Zimmer’s field goal.

Any hope of a Jaguars comeback was extinguished in the fourth quarter when Southern, driving into Panthers territory, saw a pass from Strother intercepted by Prairie View cornerback Kamren Amao. The Panthers then embarked on a clock-killing drive that ended with McDowell’s second touchdown, his 1-yard run, to put the game out of reach with just under two minutes to play.

The win marks the third straight for Prairie View A&M, which has found its footing after a 1-2 start to the season. The Panthers will look to continue their winning ways when they host Lincoln (California) on Oct. 25.

Southern, mired in a four-game losing streak, will try to regroup when it hosts Florida A&M on Oct. 25.
