Texas A&M at Arkansas
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a wild, high-scoring affair that defied pregame projections, Texas A&M remained undefeated, escaping a furious fourth-quarter rally by Arkansas to secure a 45-42 victory Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 73,845 at a rain-soaked Razorback Stadium.
The game, which featured 1,127 yards of total offense, saw the Aggies build a seemingly comfortable 18-point lead in the third quarter only to watch the Razorbacks storm back, scoring 15 points in the final quarter and coming within a failed onside kick of a potential miracle finish.
Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed was the catalyst for the Aggies’ offense, delivering a dynamic performance. The sophomore from Nashville, Tennessee, completed 23 of 32 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 55 yards and another score on six carries. His 46-yard scramble in the third quarter set the tone for a period where the Aggies pulled away.
Running back Rueben Owens II was Reed’s primary partner, grinding out 69 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and adding 27 receiving yards.
Despite the loss, Arkansas (2-4) showcased a potent offensive attack led by quarterback Taylen Green. The Lewisville, Texas, native threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-32 passing and was a constant threat with his legs, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was O’Mega Blake, who hauled in seven receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.
The Razorbacks’ ground game was powered by Mike Washington Jr., who exploded for 147 rushing yards on 16 attempts, including a 48-yard burst on the game’s opening drive.
The contest began as a defensive struggle, with both teams trading field goals on their first possessions. Arkansas struck first with a 22-yard Scott Starzyk field goal, and Texas A&M answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Reed to Ashton Bethel-Roman.
The Aggies (6-0) began to seize control in the second quarter. Reed capped a methodical drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, and later connected with tight end Nate Boerkircher on a 1-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 21-3.
Arkansas, however, closed the first half with a dramatic flurry. Green engineered a quick drive, finishing it with a 27-yard touchdown run. After forcing a Texas A&M punt, the Razorbacks got the ball back with 35 seconds left. Washington Jr. broke free for a 57-yard run to the Aggies’ 7-yard line, and with two seconds on the clock, Green found Blake for a 7-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 21-20 at the break.
The momentum was short-lived. Texas A&M came out of the locker room and scored on its first two possessions of the second half. Reed hit KC Concepcion for a 17-yard touchdown, and after an Arkansas three-and-out, Randy Bond connected on a 29-yard field goal to push the lead to 31-20.
Arkansas responded with a 75-yard drive, capped by Green’s 1-yard plunge, to make it 31-27. But the Aggies answered right back, with Owens plunging in from 14 yards out to conclude a 75-yard drive and re-establish a two-score lead at 38-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
The final period belonged to the Razorbacks, who refused to go quietly. Green led an 80-yard march, finding tight end Jaden Platt for a 4-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion pass brought Arkansas within a field goal at 38-35.
Texas A&M appeared to deliver a knockout blow on the ensuing drive, with Owens scoring his second touchdown on a 12-yard run to make it 45-35 with 6:52 remaining.
The Aggie defense then came up with a massive stop, sacking Green for a 20-yard loss and forcing a punt. Texas A&M seemed poised to run out the clock, but a holding penalty nullified a 57-yard touchdown run by Reed, and the Aggies were forced to punt it back.
Given one final chance with 3:44 left, Green engineered a desperate, 15-play, 93-yard drive. He completed a 36-yard pass to Blake on a fourth-and-33 and, with 10 seconds left, hit CJ Brown for a 4-yard touchdown to pull within 45-42.
The comeback attempt ended there, as Texas A&M recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory.
Defensively, Texas A&M was led by Dalton Brooks, who recorded nine tackles and a sack. Arkansas linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr. posted a game-high 11 tackles in the losing effort.
The combined 87 points wildly surpassed the pregame over/under of 57.5, and the result was an upset according to the betting lines, as Arkansas had been installed as a 7.5-point favorite. The Aggies’ perfect season continues as they head into a road contest at LSU next Saturday. Arkansas, now 2-4, will look to rebound at home against Auburn.
