Texas A&M Outlasts Arkansas in High-Scoring Shootout
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth shootout that defied pregame expectations, Texas A&M remained undefeated, escaping a raucous Razorback Stadium with a 45-42 victory over Arkansas on Saturday afternoon.
The game, witnessed by 73,845 fans, was a dramatic departure from the defensive struggle most had anticipated. The Aggies improved to 6-0, while the Razorbacks fell to 2-4 in a heartbreaking loss.
The contest was defined by the dual-threat prowess of both quarterbacks. Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed was nearly flawless, completing 23 of 32 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns while adding 55 rushing yards and another score on the ground. His counterpart, Arkansas’s Taylen Green, was equally spectacular, throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 85 yards and two more scores.
Despite the final margin, the game was in doubt until the final seconds. After a furious fourth-quarter rally brought Arkansas within a field goal, the Razorbacks executed a successful onside kick with just over a minute remaining. Green then drove his team to the Texas A&M 4-yard line with 10 seconds left. On fourth down, he found CJ Brown for a 4-yard touchdown pass, pulling Arkansas to 45-42.
Needing a second onside kick to have a chance, Arkansas’s attempt went out of bounds, allowing Texas A&M to kneel out the clock and secure the win.
The Aggies built their lead with a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Razorbacks 17-7. The period featured a 46-yard scramble by Reed that set up a 17-yard touchdown pass to KC Concepcion, a Randy Bond field goal, and a 14-yard touchdown run by Rueben Owens II that gave Texas A&M a 38-27 lead heading into the final frame.
Owens was a critical component of the Aggie offense, rushing for 69 yards and two touchdowns and catching two passes for 27 yards. Ashton Bethel-Roman was Reed’s top deep threat, hauling in four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Arkansas’s offense, however, refused to quit. The Razorbacks were powered by a herculean effort from running back Mike Washington Jr., who gashed the Texas A&M defense for 147 rushing yards on 16 carries, including a 48-yard burst on the game’s opening drive. That drive stalled, however, resulting in a Scott Starzyk field goal, a theme of missed opportunities for the home team.
After falling behind 21-3 in the second quarter, Arkansas mounted a comeback before halftime. Green capped a drive with a 27-yard touchdown run and, after a quick Texas A&M three-and-out, engineered a two-minute drill that ended with a 7-yard touchdown pass to O’Mega Blake as time expired in the half, cutting the deficit to 21-20.
Blake finished with seven receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.
The Aggie defense, while battered for 585 total yards, made crucial plays when it mattered. Linebacker Daymion Sanford and defensive back Dalton Brooks led the team with five and nine tackles, respectively, with Brooks adding a critical fourth-quarter sack. Defensive back Marcus Ratcliffe and linebacker Will Lee III each contributed seven tackles.
For Arkansas, linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr. had a game-high 11 tackles, but the defense struggled to contain Reed and the multifaceted Texas A&M attack all evening.
The result was a stunning upset in terms of the pregame betting lines, where Arkansas had been installed as a 7.5-point favorite. The combined 87 points also easily soared over the posted over/under of 57.5.
Texas A&M now looks ahead to a road test at LSU next Saturday. Arkansas will return to Razorback Stadium to host Auburn, also next Saturday.
