Drake at San Diego
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Harry Balke drilled a 55-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Drake Bulldogs to a 19-16 victory over the San Diego Toreros in a non-conference football game Saturday at Torero Stadium.
The walk-off kick capped a wild fourth-quarter rally for the Bulldogs, who scored 12 points in the final period to overcome a late deficit and even their record at 2-2. San Diego fell to 3-3 with the loss.
The game was a defensive struggle, a stark contrast to the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 39-21 San Diego victory. The teams combined for just 35 total points, well under the pregame over/under line of 49.5.
San Diego controlled the early stages, building a 13-7 halftime lead on the strength of two Emiliano Salazar field goals and a 73-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Yosei Takahashi to Cole Monach. The trick play, with Takahashi taking a lateral and launching a deep ball, gave the Toreros momentum late in the second quarter.
Drake’s first-half touchdown came on a 33-yard run by Luke Woodson. The Bulldogs’ offense, however, was largely stymied by a stout San Diego defense for the first three quarters.
The Toreros extended their lead to 16-7 with 1:09 remaining in the game on Salazar’s third field goal, a 41-yarder. That set the stage for Drake’s frantic finish.
The Bulldogs needed just two plays to answer. Backup quarterback Logan Inagawa, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound native of Atlanta, scrambled for a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:38 left on the clock. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving San Diego with a 16-13 advantage.
Drake’s defense forced a quick punt, giving the ball back to the offense with just over a minute to play. Starting quarterback Chase Spellman, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 128 yards and added 13 yards on the ground, efficiently moved the Bulldogs into field goal range. A key 36-yard completion from Spellman to Hank Foley set up Balke’s game-winning kick from 55 yards out.
The Bulldogs’ ground game was led by Nick Herman, who rushed for 96 yards on 15 carries. Woodson added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown, also catching four passes for 27 yards.
For San Diego, running back Adam Criter was the workhorse, carrying the ball 28 times for 108 yards. Quarterback Tyler Voss completed 14 of 28 passes for 109 yards. Monach’s 73-yard touchdown catch was the Toreros’ biggest offensive play, accounting for the majority of his 82 receiving yards on two catches.
The loss overshadowed a strong punting performance from San Diego’s Salazar, who averaged 44.8 yards on six punts.
Drake will look to build on the dramatic win when it hosts Davidson next Saturday. San Diego has a bye week before traveling to face Davidson on Oct. 25.
