Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Dominate Southern Jaguars in Home Victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game that began with a stunning Southern touchdown, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats quickly seized control and never looked back, erupting for 31 unanswered points across the second and third quarters to throttle the Southern Jaguars 45-14 on Saturday at Daytona Stadium.

The victory, played before an announced crowd of 8,212, improved Bethune-Cookman’s record to 2-4 on the season, while Southern fell to 1-4.

The contest defied the pregame projections. While Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a close 40-33 win for the Wildcats and their ELO system gave them a 55.6 percent probability to win, the actual result was a comprehensive blowout. Bethune-Cookman, installed as a slim 2-point favorite, easily covered the spread, and the combined point total of 59 sailed over the over/under line of 55.5.

Southern stunned the home crowd early, striking with a massive play on their opening drive. Quarterback Cam’Ron McCoy, a Saint Louis native, connected with receiver Darren Morris on a 71-yard touchdown pass just over five minutes into the game, giving the Jaguars a 7-0 lead.

The early advantage was short-lived. Bethune-Cookman answered late in the first quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom, knotting the score at 7-7. From that point forward, the Wildcats’ offense operated with ruthless efficiency.

The second quarter belonged entirely to Bethune-Cookman. Running back Rashon Brown, from Pahokee, Florida, broke a 12-yard touchdown run early in the period to give the Wildcats their first lead. Later in the quarter, Ransom showcased his arm, finding receiver Rickie Shaw II on a 5-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 21-7 heading into halftime.

Any hopes of a Southern comeback were extinguished in a dominant third-quarter display by the Wildcats. They poured on 17 points, starting with a 2-yard touchdown plunge from running back Ali Scott Jr. of Powder Springs, Georgia. Kicker Juan Dominguez of West Palm Beach then added a 32-yard field goal. Before the quarter ended, Ransom struck again through the air, launching a 33-yard touchdown pass to Lorenzo Jenkins of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, pushing the lead to an insurmountable 38-7.

Southern managed to find the end zone again early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Ashton Strother of Memphis, Tennessee, hit receiver Malachi Jackson of Atlanta, Georgia, with a 15-yard touchdown pass. But Bethune-Cookman had the final say, as running back Juan Rodriguez of Miami, Florida, capped the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run with just under five minutes remaining to produce the final margin of 45-14.

The statistical ledger told the story of Bethune-Cookman’s offensive dominance. The Wildcats’ quarterback, Cam’Ron Ransom, was the engine of the victory. The Lakeland, Florida, native was precise and productive, completing 27 of 36 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 35 rushing yards and another score on the ground. The Wildcats’ ground game was a multi-headed monster, with Rashon Brown leading the way with 65 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Ali Scott Jr. and Juan Rodriguez combined for 78 rushing yards and two additional touchdowns.

Southern’s offense, by contrast, was reliant on big plays but could not sustain drives. The Jaguars used two quarterbacks, with Cam’Ron McCoy and Ashton Strother each throwing for 101 yards and a touchdown. Darren Morris was the primary deep threat, hauling in three passes for 87 yards and the game’s opening score. Running back Trey Holly of Farmerville, Louisiana, provided a bright spot, grinding out 71 yards on 14 carries.

The loss extends a difficult stretch for Southern, which has now dropped three consecutive games since its lone victory over Mississippi Valley State on Aug. 30. The Jaguars will look to regroup next Saturday when they host Prairie View.

Bethune-Cookman, which snapped a one-game skid with the win, will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on Oct. 25 to host Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The victory provides a significant momentum boost for the Wildcats as they head into the heart of their conference schedule.
