Abilene Christian at West Georgia
CARROLLTON, Ga. (Interstat) — In a result that defied pregame projections, the Abilene Christian Wildcats delivered a commanding 30-13 victory over the previously surging West Georgia Wolves on Saturday at University Stadium.
The Wildcats, improving to 3-3, controlled the game on the ground and through the air, while the Wolves, who entered the contest with a 5-0 record, saw their perfect season end as they fell to 5-1. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a West Georgia win with a 42-28 final score and gave the Wolves a 74.3 percent probability of victory, making Abilene Christian’s decisive win a significant upset.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with both teams trading field goals in the first quarter. West Georgia’s Tommy Holden connected from 21 yards out, and Abilene Christian’s Brandon Perez answered with a 34-yard kick, leaving the score tied 3-3.
The second quarter belonged entirely to the Wildcats, who erupted for 14 points to take a commanding lead they would not relinquish. The scoring barrage started with a spectacular 90-yard touchdown run by James Jones, breaking the tie and energizing the Abilene Christian sideline. Quarterback Stone Earle then engineered a methodical drive, capping it with an 8-yard touchdown pass to JB Mitchell III to extend the lead.
Earle, a junior from Keller, Texas, was the catalyst for the Wildcats’ offense. He completed 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns, while also proving to be a dynamic threat on the ground, rushing for 78 yards on nine carries. His favorite target was Javon Gipson, who hauled in five receptions for 76 yards.
The Wolves managed a second field goal from Holden, this time from 23 yards, just before halftime, but still trailed 17-6 at the break.
Abilene Christian extended its lead in the third quarter. Earle found tight end Chidubem Lebechi for a 6-yard touchdown strike, pushing the advantage to 24-6.
West Georgia finally found the end zone on its ensuing possession. Quarterback Colton Fitzgerald, who finished 15 of 28 for 241 yards, connected with his top receiver, DeAndre Buchannon, on a 54-yard touchdown pass. Buchannon was a bright spot for the Wolves, amassing 137 receiving yards on six catches.
Any momentum for a West Georgia comeback was short-lived. Abilene Christian put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter when Earle threw his third touchdown pass of the day, an 11-yard strike to J.J. Henry, making the score 30-13.
The Wildcats’ defense sealed the victory on the next drive. Fitzgerald drove the Wolves into Abilene Christian territory, but his fourth-down pass fell incomplete, effectively ending the threat. The Wildcats’ defense, led by an interception from defensive back Tyson Williams, held firm for the remainder of the game.
Abilene Christian’s ground game was a workhorse, with Rovaughn Banks Jr. carrying the ball 21 times for 79 yards, helping the Wildcats control the clock and tempo.
West Georgia punter Reilly Mason had a busy day, punting four times for 165 yards as the Wolves’ offense frequently stalled.
The loss is the first of the season for West Georgia, which will look to rebound next Saturday on the road against Tarleton State. Abilene Christian, now at .500, will travel to face Southern Utah next Saturday, aiming to build on this statement victory.
