Wildcats Upset Previously Unbeaten Wolves in Road Victory
CARROLLTON, Ga. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Abilene Christian Wildcats delivered a commanding performance to hand the West Georgia Wolves their first loss of the season, 30-13, on Saturday at University Stadium.
Entering the contest as a slight underdog and projected by statistical models to lose by two touchdowns, Abilene Christian instead controlled the game on both sides of the ball, improving its record to 3-3. West Georgia, which had started the year 5-0, saw its perfect run end and fell to 5-1.
The story of the game was the dynamic dual-threat performance of Abilene Christian quarterback Stone Earle. The Keller, Texas, native orchestrated the Wildcats’ offense with precision and power, completing 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He supplemented his aerial attack with 78 rushing yards on nine carries, consistently extending drives with his legs.
Earle’s favorite targets were Javon Gipson, who hauled in five catches for 76 yards, and Bryan Henry, who added four receptions for 50 yards. The scoring was distributed, with touchdown catches by JB Mitchell III, Chidubem Lebechi, and J.J. Henry.
On the ground, the Wildcats were paced by Rovaughn Banks Jr., who ground out 79 yards on 21 carries, providing a steady, clock-chewing presence throughout the contest.
Defensively, the Wildcats were equally formidable, stifling a West Georgia offense that had averaged over 30 points per game in its undefeated start. The Wolves were held to a single touchdown until the final minutes of the third quarter. A key moment came when defensive back Tyson Williams of Bixby, Oklahoma, intercepted a pass from West Georgia’s Bryce Dickerson, snuffing out a potential scoring drive.
For West Georgia, quarterback Colton Fitzgerald of Santa Clara, California, finished 15 of 28 for 241 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His primary weapon was receiver DeAndre Buchannon from Atlanta, who turned in a spectacular individual effort with six receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown. Buchannon also contributed 73 yards on three kick returns.
The Wolves’ running game, however, was effectively neutralized, managing only 35 net yards.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with both teams trading field goals in the first quarter. Abilene Christian’s Brandon Perez connected from 34 yards, while West Georgia’s Tommy Holden answered with a 21-yard kick, leaving the score tied 3-3.
The second quarter belonged entirely to the Wildcats, as they exploded for 14 points to seize control. Earle found his rhythm, engineering a methodical drive that culminated in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell III. Later in the quarter, Abilene Christian’s defense forced a punt, and the offense responded with another scoring drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run from Jordon Vaughn, sending the Wildcats into halftime with a commanding 17-6 lead.
Abilene Christian extended its lead early in the third quarter. Earle led the team on another impressive drive, finishing it with a 6-yard touchdown strike to tight end Chidubem Lebechi, pushing the advantage to 24-6.
West Georgia finally found the end zone late in the third quarter when Fitzgerald connected with Buchannon on a deep 54-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 24-13.
Any hope of a Wolves comeback was extinguished in the fourth quarter. Abilene Christian put together a decisive, time-consuming drive that ended with Earle’s third touchdown pass of the day, an 11-yard connection with J.J. Henry. The scoring play pushed the lead to 30-13, and the Wildcats’ defense closed out the game from there, securing the significant road victory.
The loss is a setback for West Georgia, which had been one of the surprise teams of the early season. The Wolves will look to rebound next Saturday when they travel to face Tarleton State.
Abilene Christian, now at .500, will aim to build on this momentum as they head into their next contest at Southern Utah.
