Campbell Routs Hampton for First Win Behind Cowan’s 3 Touchdowns
HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — Defying pregame projections and snapping a four-game losing streak, the Campbell Fightin’ Camels erupted for 21 points in the third quarter to secure a decisive 38-21 victory over the Hampton Pirates on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.
The win, Campbell’s first of the season, was fueled by a dominant ground attack and a series of critical defensive stops that silenced a Hampton offense that had been favored by three points. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Hampton win with a 70.3 percent probability, but the Fightin’ Camels controlled the contest from the second quarter onward.
A sluggish first quarter saw both teams trade punts and Campbell miss a 20-yard field goal attempt, leaving the game scoreless. The second quarter, however, provided a glimpse of the back-and-forth battle that was expected. Campbell opened the scoring with a 33-yard Alex Crabb field goal at the 13:17 mark.
Hampton responded immediately with a commanding 11-play, 75-yard drive. The Pirates leaned heavily on running back Gracen Goldsmith, who capped the series with a 3-yard touchdown run. After a Campbell fumble gave Hampton prime field position, Pirates quarterback Braden Davis connected with Maxwell Moss on a 10-yard touchdown pass, giving the home team a 14-3 lead.
The Fightin’ Camels answered before halftime, engineering a 67-yard drive of their own. Running back JJ Cowan, the game’s standout performer, finished the possession with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone, narrowing Hampton’s lead to 14-10 at the intermission.
Any momentum Hampton carried into the locker room was swiftly extinguished in the third quarter. Campbell’s offense found its rhythm, while its defense completely stifled the Pirates. The Camels took their first lead of the game on their opening drive of the half, with Cowan scoring his second touchdown on a 5-yard run to make it 17-14.
The Campbell defense then forced a quick three-and-out. On the ensuing possession, quarterback Mike Chandler II orchestrated another scoring drive, highlighted by a 41-yard touchdown run from Ethan Lawrence that extended the lead to 24-14.
The Camels’ defense continued its relentless pressure, leading to another Hampton punt. The special teams unit then delivered the knockout blow. Lakeem Rudolph intercepted a Braden Davis pass and returned it for a touchdown, pushing the Campbell advantage to 31-14 and effectively sealing the game heading into the final quarter.
Hampton managed a consolation score early in the fourth quarter, with Goldsmith scoring his second rushing touchdown from 3 yards out to cut the deficit to 31-21. The Pirates’ attempt to mount a further comeback was thwarted when Campbell’s Carlando Crump intercepted Davis near midfield.
Campbell iced the game with just over a minute remaining, as Cowan broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run, his third of the day, to provide the final 38-21 margin.
Cowan was the engine of the Campbell offense, amassing 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Lawrence added 80 yards and a score on nine attempts. The Fightin’ Camels’ quarterback duo of Chandler and Kamden Sixkiller combined for 125 passing yards, with Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox hauling in three passes for 63 yards.
For Hampton, Davis completed 11 of 17 passes for 131 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Goldsmith led the Pirates’ ground game with 32 yards and two touchdowns. Moss was the primary receiving threat, catching four passes for 81 yards and a score.
The victory improves Campbell’s record to 1-5 on the season, while Hampton falls to 2-4. The Fightin’ Camels will look to build on this momentum when they host New Hampshire next Saturday. Hampton travels to face Villanova.
