Morehead State at Stetson
DELAND, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and missed opportunities, the Stetson Hatters held off a late surge from the Morehead State Eagles to secure a 21-14 victory on Saturday at Spec Martin Stadium.
The win lifts both teams to identical 2-4 records on the season, a result that defied pregame projections which heavily favored the visiting Eagles.
Stetson’s offense, while not explosive, was efficient enough to build a lead that its defense would not relinquish. The Hatters scored a touchdown in each of the first two quarters to take a 14-0 advantage into halftime, a margin that felt substantial in a game where sustained drives were a rarity.
The Hatters’ scoring began early. Quarterback Chris Stephenson, a Tampa native, capped the game’s opening drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. Stephenson was a dual threat for Stetson, rushing for 106 yards on 19 carries and passing for another 93 yards, accounting for two touchdowns.
Stetson extended its lead in the second quarter with a methodical drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by Cayden Betts. The Hatters’ ground game was a consistent weapon, with Trey Clark grinding out 71 yards on 17 carries and Michael Dempsey adding 45 yards on eight attempts.
The Eagles’ offense, meanwhile, was stifled for three quarters. They were plagued by penalties, dropped passes, and a stifling Stetson defense that came up with two critical interceptions. Linebacker Shug Bentley and defensive back Justin Rodriguez each recorded a pick for the Hatters, halting promising Morehead State drives.
The game appeared to be slipping away from the Eagles when Stetson struck again in the fourth quarter. Stephenson connected with Dempsey on a 27-yard touchdown pass, pushing the Hatters’ lead to 21-0 and seemingly putting the game out of reach.
However, Morehead State finally found its rhythm. The Eagles’ offense, which had been dormant for the first 45 minutes, erupted for two touchdowns in the final quarter. The comeback was led by running back Isaac Stopke, who punched in a 1-yard touchdown run, and Jackson Lanier, who added a 6-yard scoring run shortly after.
The Eagles’ late surge was fueled by quarterback Bryce Patterson, who connected with receiver Montez Green on a 38-yard pass to set up one score. Ryan Upp was Patterson’s primary target, hauling in five catches for 81 yards.
Despite the late push, Stetson’s defense secured the win in the final minutes. After Morehead State’s second touchdown made it a one-score game, the Hatters’ offense managed to drain the clock, using its effective running game to secure first downs and prevent the Eagles from getting a final possession.
The final score of 35 combined points fell dramatically under the pregame over/under line of 56.5, highlighting the defensive nature of the contest. The result was also a surprise based on national metrics, which had given Morehead State a 75 percent probability to win, even though Stetson was a 5.5-point favorite on the betting spread.
Stetson looks to build on the victory next Saturday when it travels to face Presbyterian. Morehead State, after its second consecutive loss, returns home to host Marist.
