Stetson Hatters Edge Morehead State Eagles for Homecoming Victory

DELAND, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and missed opportunities, the Stetson Hatters secured a 21-14 victory over the Morehead State Eagles on Saturday at Spec Martin Stadium, a result that defied pregame projections and saw both teams even their records at 2-4.

The contest, which saw a combined 35 points fall well short of the over/under line of 56.5, was a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair many anticipated. Stetson, despite being a 5.5-point favorite, entered with only a 24.9 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, which heavily favored the visiting Eagles.

Stetson set the tone early, capitalizing on its opening drive. The Hatters’ offense, led by the dynamic play of quarterback Chris Stephenson, marched down the field with a mix of runs and short passes. Stephenson, a Tampa native, capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, giving the Hatters a 7-0 lead with 12:50 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hatters’ defense then took over, consistently stifling Morehead State’s offensive efforts. The Eagles rotated quarterbacks Carter Cravens and Bryce Patterson early but struggled to find a rhythm against a relentless Stetson pass rush and secondary. Linebacker Shug Bentley and defensive back Justin Rodriguez each recorded first-half interceptions, snuffing out promising Eagle drives.

Stetson extended its lead in the second quarter with a methodical, clock-consuming drive. After a series of carries by Trey Clark and Michael Dempsey moved the chains, running back Cayden Betts of Corinth, Mississippi, punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Hatters up 14-0 with 9:56 left in the half.

Morehead State finally found a spark before the break. Quarterback Bryce Patterson connected with receiver Anthony Ice for a 21-yard gain and later found Cannon Dinger for 13 yards, moving the Eagles into field goal range. However, the chance to put points on the board before halftime evaporated when kicker Thomas Schwartz V missed a 45-yard field goal attempt, leaving the score at 14-0.

The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams trading punts. Morehead State’s best chance to get back into the game came when linebacker Dillon Schobourgh recovered a Stephenson fumble, but the Eagles’ ensuing drive stalled near midfield. Stetson’s defense, led by key plays from Bentley and a sack by Immanuel Williams and Andrew Martin, continued to frustrate Patterson and the Eagles’ offense.

Stetson appeared to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Facing a third down, Stephenson found running back Michael Dempsey on a screen pass, and the Tampa native weaved through the defense for a 27-yard touchdown reception, stretching the Hatters’ lead to 21-0.

Refusing to quit, Morehead State’s offense suddenly came to life. Patterson, from Versailles, Kentucky, finally found his deep connection with receiver Montez Green, hitting him for a 38-yard strike that placed the Eagles at the Stetson 1-yard line. Two plays later, versatile linebacker Isaac Stopke, who also saw significant action on offense, powered in for a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 21-7.

The Eagles’ defense forced a quick punt, and Patterson went back to work. He engineered a crisp 60-yard scoring drive, completing key passes to Ryan Upp and again to Stopke. Running back Jackson Lanier of Bluffton, South Carolina, finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run, suddenly pulling Morehead State within a single score at 21-14 with 6:03 remaining.

The onside kick attempt failed, but the Eagles’ defense again held firm, forcing a Stetson punt to get the ball back with a chance to tie. The comeback hopes were dashed, however, when Patterson’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, effectively sealing the game for the Hatters.

Stetson’s victory was anchored by a balanced offensive attack and a stubborn defense. Stephenson finished with 93 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and 106 rushing yards with another score on the ground. The Hatters’ ground game was a committee effort, with Trey Clark gaining 71 yards, Michael Dempsey adding 45, and Cayden Betts contributing 35 yards and a touchdown.

For Morehead State, Bryce Patterson completed 11 of 22 passes for 167 yards and added 7 rushing yards. Ryan Upp was his primary target, hauling in five catches for 81 yards. The Eagles’ rushing attack was led by Isaac Stopke, who gained 41 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while Jackson Lanier added 31 yards and a score.

The win gives Stetson momentum as they prepare to travel to face Presbyterian next Saturday. Morehead State, meanwhile, will look to regroup and end its two-game skid when it returns home to host Marist.
