Saint Thomas (Minn.) at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Saint Thomas Tommies erupted for their first victory of the season in dominant fashion, routing the Davidson Wildcats 57-13 on Saturday at Richardson Stadium.

After three consecutive narrow losses, the Tommies left no doubt, amassing a season-high in points and overwhelming the Wildcats in every phase of the game. The victory improved Saint Thomas’ record to 1-3, while Davidson fell to 1-4.

The Tommie offense was a model of efficiency, with three different quarterbacks combining for five touchdown passes. The scoring started in the first quarter when starter Andy Peters connected with Patrick Bowen on a 29-yard touchdown strike.

Saint Thomas then broke the game open with a 22-point second quarter. Bowen added a 7-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion run by Stefano Giovannelli. Joseph Koch, who led the ground attack, punched in the first of his three touchdowns with a 3-yard run. He then capped the first-half scoring with a 4-yard run just 29 seconds before halftime, sending the Tommies into the break with a commanding 29-0 lead.

The offensive explosion continued after halftime. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, backup quarterback Amari Powell found Quentin Cobb-Butler for an 85-yard touchdown. Bowen followed with a 49-yard touchdown run on the next Tommie possession, and Koch concluded the third-quarter scoring blitz with a 13-yard run.

Davidson finally got on the board late in the third quarter when quarterback Coulter Cleland hit Brody Reina for a 6-yard touchdown. Cleland connected with Reina again early in the fourth quarter for a 12-yard score, but the Wildcats failed to convert the extra point.

Saint Thomas capped the scoring with 8:56 remaining in the game as third-string quarterback Ryan Jackson threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Giovannelli.

The Tommie offense was explosive throughout. Peters, from Boise, Idaho, was nearly perfect, completing 10 of 13 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. Powell, of Valencia, California, added 148 yards and a touchdown on just 3-of-4 passing, while Jackson, from Lagrange, Illinois, went 5 for 6 for 29 yards and a score.

Bowen, a running back from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was a dual threat, rushing for 62 yards and two touchdowns while also catching a 29-yard touchdown pass. Koch, from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, rushed for 53 yards and three scores. Cobb-Butler was the leading receiver, hauling in four passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.

For Davidson, Cleland, a quarterback from Racine, Ohio, completed 22 of 33 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but the Wildcats’ rushing attack was stifled, managing only 108 yards as a team. Ivan Hoyt of Boerne, Texas, was the top receiver with five catches for 78 yards.

The lopsided result defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a close 30-28 Saint Thomas victory, and its ELO system gave the Tommies a 70.1 percent probability to win. However, Davidson had been installed as a 21.5-point favorite by oddsmakers. The combined score of 70 points went over the betting over/under line of 58.5.

Saint Thomas will look to build on the win when it hosts Valparaiso next Saturday. Davidson will travel to face Drake.
