Saint Thomas (Minn.) rolls past Davidson for first win
DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Saint Thomas Tommies unleashed a relentless offensive assault and capitalized on a series of Davidson miscues to secure a decisive 57-13 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The win, the first of the season for Saint Thomas, was a dramatic reversal of fortune for a Tommies team that had suffered three consecutive narrow losses. Davidson, conversely, saw its record fall to 1-4.
The game was a stark contrast to pregame projections, which had Davidson installed as a 21.5-point favorite and Interstat’s game simulator predicting a tight 30-28 Saint Thomas victory. The Tommies defied those odds from the outset, controlling every facet of the game.
Saint Thomas set the tone on its second possession. Quarterback Andy Peters, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound sophomore from Boise, Idaho, engineered a methodical drive that he capped with a 29-yard touchdown pass to running back Patrick Bowen with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
The second quarter was when the Tommies broke the game wide open, exploding for 22 points. The onslaught began with a spectacular special teams play. After forcing a Davidson punt, JaShawn Todd fielded the kick and returned it 77 yards to the Wildcats’ 23-yard line. Three plays later, Bowen powered in for a 7-yard rushing score, and a successful two-point conversion run by Stefano Giovannelli extended the lead.
Davidson’s offense, led by quarterback Coulter Cleland, showed signs of life on the ensuing drive, moving the ball deep into Saint Thomas territory. However, the drive ended in disaster when Wildcats running back Mason Sheron fumbled at the Tommies’ 11-yard line, with Saint Thomas linebacker Charlie Boucher recovering the loose ball.
The Tommies promptly marched 89 yards the other way, with Joseph Koch plunging in from 3 yards out for the score. After another defensive stand, Saint Thomas got the ball back with just over a minute remaining in the half and added another Koch touchdown run, this time from 4 yards out, to take a commanding 29-0 lead into halftime.
Any hope of a Davidson comeback was extinguished immediately after the break. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Tommies quarterback Amari Powell connected with Quentin Cobb-Butler on an 85-yard touchdown strike, blowing the game open at 36-0.
Powell, a 6-foot-1, 188-pound freshman from Valencia, California, showcased his arm strength on the play, which was part of a highly efficient day for the Saint Thomas quarterbacks. Peters finished 10 of 13 for 190 yards and a touchdown, while Powell went 3 of 4 for 148 yards and a score.
The Tommies’ ground game was equally dominant. Bowen rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns, while Koch added 53 yards and three scores. Cobb-Butler was a dynamic weapon, catching four passes for 137 yards and a touchdown and adding a 9-yard run.
Davidson finally got on the board late in the third quarter when Cleland found Brody Reina for a 6-yard touchdown pass. Cleland added another touchdown pass to Reina, from 12 yards out, in the fourth quarter. Cleland, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior from Racine, Ohio, finished 22 of 33 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but the Wildcats’ offense was plagued by turnovers and stalled drives.
Saint Thomas capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when third-string quarterback Ryan Jackson, a 5-foot-10, 198-pound freshman from Lagrange, Illinois, found Giovannelli for a 19-yard touchdown pass.
The Tommies’ defense was opportunistic, recovering two Davidson fumbles and intercepting a pass from Cleland, with Ryan Calcagno making the pick. The Wildcats’ punting unit was busy, with Breyson Palmer punting six times for 213 yards.
Saint Thomas, now 1-3, will look to build on this momentum when it hosts Valparaiso next Saturday. Davidson, at 1-4, will travel to face Drake.
